yeah.. I read it..Indian experience says it wont work... you cant easily kill a social custom using law
Currently I want the following change to the law of succession (to hindu law... that is... because muslims have different laws)
1. The girl child gets equal share of property compulsorily ... no option of giving it to brother .. adjusted against dowry amount
2. The dowry is allowed openly.. audited and accepted by both parties that certain amount changed hand
3. In case of divorce , the girl gets back dowry amount + interest


There are matriarchial society in north east India where it might be opposite, but principle should be same.

Indian dowry practice is like the practice of burqa in Muslims. You cannot pass laws that are incircumventable because it is the girl and her side who actually buckle under pressure and go along and play the game most times. "Free will" is impossible to ascertain and verify.
