China would prefer to have better relations with the US while at the same time isolating other nations in the Asia-Pacific region that has claims on islands, atolls and seas which China see as theirs, thus they are being "friendly" to the US despite that many know that Chinese has a hostile attitude against the Americans, particularly at their foreign policy.

What ever the Chinese government may be thinking, they seem to be applying Sun Tzu's "Art of War."

Anyways, sometimes it is really hard to know why some members here act like as if they want to nuke countries that also has the same claims on islands, atolls, shoals and seas. I guess for others, eradicating other countries with the same claims is easier to do if they have the chance.

ASEAN has a policy of not interfering in internal business or business between members of the Association or business between a member of the Association with a nation outside. ASEAN keeps it strictly an economical organization, and does not try to influence the policy of any of its members. So yeah, we do not call it "turn away". They are just following the rule. Like ASEAN did nothing over the dispute between Thailand and Cambodia, or the crisis in Thailand.
