European Union and Germany representatives yesterday said the government and opposition should discuss the best ways for development of Bangladesh as it has all chances to become a middle income economy by 2021.

This view was expressed by German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Dirk Niebel, and EU Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs during a press conference at Sonargaon Hotel last evening.

The two arrived here yesterday on a four-day visit in a joint mission.

On the first day of their trip, they called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Finance Minister AMA Muhith and State Minister for Environment and Forest Hasan Mahmud.

The delegates also met representatives of the civil society at the hotel.

They will hold talks with Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia on June 23 and address another press conference.

None of them gave any direct answer when asked about the current political controversy over the Caretaker government system, but said it is better for the politicians to work together for the people.

On current political situation, the German minister said "Despite problems, Bangladesh is a stable country in the region comparing with Pakistan and Afghanistan and the country has all chances to achieve the Millennium Development Goals [MDGs] by 2015 and emerge as a middle income economy by 2021."

"You can't stay at home and say no," said Niebel in an oblique reference to the main opposition, which is now boycotting parliament session.

On another question, the he said corruption is a major obstacle to development, fighting against poverty and overseas investment.

They praised the role of the civil society for development of a country and said in democracy there should be a space for expressing different views. A country could develop using the experience of the members of the civil society.

The German minister said the civil society in Bangladesh had expected more from the new government but it failed to deliver.

Niebel said "Bangladesh is internationally renowned for its vibrant NGO scene. In our meeting with civil society we discussed progress and challenges in the development of the country."

On talks with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, German Minister Niebel said he was impressed by the successes of Bangladesh in the past years while poverty and child mortality rates declined. And, economic growth of 6.7 percent is remarkable.

"Bangladesh is a very dynamic country and I am deeply impressed by the successes it achieved in the past years. Through my visit, I would like to encourage partners to invest in good governance to realise the huge development potential of the country,” he said.

"I promise our Bangladeshi partners the continued support of the German government."

The EU Commissioner said "The EU has been a longstanding supporter for Bangladesh as it has been achieving remarkable economic growth, a good track record for achieving the MDGs, and a reputation as a vibrant democracy."

"EU will continue its support as Bangladesh aims to become a middle income country by 2021,” he added

First step should be Bangladesh educating its masses to develop a culture of ethics. That is the most serious drawback when deal with Bangladeshi labors or manufactures. They seem to slip away from ethics very fast after a good initial start-up.

Industrialization!

Bangladesh shouldn't fall in the Trap of Services(Which would get some Quick Prosperity and Addictive!)

Go for making Big Ports, Railways and Roadways connecting Industrial Centres to the Ports and coupled with Government Support, Strive to get Bangladeshi Goods a Place in the World Market!

1) Make water defence better, this can increase productivity and gdp.

it is reported 20% of bangladesh will be under water if water level raised by 1m

This is a very interesting topic. I am just writing hurriedly. The following steps are needed for the best ways to develop Bnagladesh:

1. Neutralising External Threat.
2. Difusing the Internal Threat.
3. Minimum Unity Among the political Parties.
4.Increasing the Social /Religious Values in the Society through Motivation.
5. Making a good relation among all the muslim countries and ultimately exporting manpower in those countries.
6. Follow a policy of neutral but not comprising with security aspects.
7. Eradicate the corruption through extreme measures.
8. Follow a true democracy not like AL marka democracy.
9. Make a good reasonable friendship with India.

Well, see how you got educated??

Among your nine top priorities, there is no place for Education, Industrialization, Health care and modernity. Rather you are suggesting to create more slaves to send to ME only to polish somebody else's boots.

We need to revisit our educational system so that they dont create this kind of mind anymore. Thats the biggest danger for this country than the external and internal threat.

Supporting poor children with education, including high education, ethical lessons, support for greater quality healthcare, technology, access to clean water, energy, national security and industrialization should be some of the highest priorities.

Also, decentralize economic development, make it even. Dhaka is already too crowded!

Bangladesh needs to ramp up its electricity production. Nuclear seems like the only quick fix for Bangladesh, tie up with Germany in this regards might be fruitful.

@ If you cannot protect your country then all those developments are meaning less. Now see we have earnt lot of foreign currency through these slaves(as per your version) and sending armed forces to the UN mission. But now in Dhaka there is huge crisis of dollar. People says it had already smuggled. Now the present rate is $ 1=77/78 Taka in black market where is the official rate is something like Tk=74.

@ Industrialisation in Bangladesh !!!. Who will invest ? Those concept of industrialisation is gone and one fine morning iajdani will come from USA and give a new theory to the labours and people like Hasina and Dipu Moni will again nationalised as they are going to introduce "Socialism" as the main fundametal in our constitution. Once it is nationalised the pandas of Awami Leaquers will again plunder the industries the way the looted the properties of 22 industrial families of Pakistan.

Mother of all our problems is over population. Whatever we do. . We will lag behind if we do not check our population growth... We have the ability to become next Malaysia soon if we can control this field.. I know we have done a lot in decreasing our population growth. but 16 crore is too much for a tiny nation like ours..

three top priorities should be
education
industry
keep check on population

@ And once we invest in our industry and if conflits with the interest of Indian industrialist how we are going to survive ? Than Sk Hasina will say no need to invest in this sector ? Once we are getting ready from India why to spoil money on this sector ??? Look !! We have a problem in every where ? The main problem is the giant India ? She interferes in our each sector !!!!! Once our garment sectors goes up India creates problem in the labour sector with money. RAW have lot of agents in Bangladesh. In the energy sector once we explore some thing closer to the border India dictate, no ! no !, you can,t explore like that it had a link with Assam oil fields. Since your country is lower basin we will have problem in the upper. We cannot give contract our sea basin to foreign invester for exploration of gas and oil due to intidimation of India. Foreigners are also reluctance to take contract ! About defence, they had been propagating that there is no need of military in Bangladesh. "Me hu na !"

@ I tell you the day we will be able to out from the clutches of Indian iron grip only than we can dream that we are now developing. Now, see recently Indian Army chief has come to Bangladesh and he has offered that India is ready to train the officer/soldier of bangladesh for dog training, training on slautering of chickens, maintenance of hourse and what not.

My list
1. Education
2. Energy
3. Healthcare
4. Clean water
5. Infrastructure
6. Industrialisation
7. Checks on population growth
8. Reduction of corruption
9. Banning of student politics
10. Better relationship with neighbouring countries

In the short term energy and core infrastructure(ports and critical road and rail links to transport goods from factories to ports) should be empasized. Medium and long term there should be much more of an emphasis on education. The country should aim to increase spending on education as proportion of GDP by double in the next 10-15 years.
