DailyMuslims - Disappearance of Buddhism from "Non Violent India": An Untold Story

Various theories have been put forward which seek to explain the tragic eclipse of Buddhism from India. According to one view, corruption in the Buddhist sangha or priesthood precipitated Buddhism's ultimate decline. While it is true that with time the Buddhist priests became increasingly lax in the observance of religious rules, corruption alone cannot explain the death of Buddhism. After all, Buddhism was replaced by an even more corrupt Brahminism. Another theory is that Buddhism disappeared from India in the wake of the Arab and Turkish invasions in which many Buddhists were said to have been killed. However, this theory, too, seems not to be convincing as a complete explanation of the extinction of Buddhism in India . After all, in places such as Bengal and Sind, which were ruled by Brahminical dynasties but had Buddhist majorities, Buddhists are said to have welcomed the Muslims as saviours who had freed them from the tyranny of 'upper' caste rule. This explains why most of the 'lower-caste' people in Eastern Bengal and Sind
embraced Islam. Few, if any, among the 'upper' castes of these regions did the same.
How many Buddishts left in pakistan today??

Buddhists welcomed the Muslims as saviours ??

And what they do to safegaurd their buddisht religion is ,they all convert to Islam, a completely new religion with in Arabic language no historic connetion, from Hindukush mountains to plains of punjab.

Yaa,i've not seen more moronic logic before.

Lets be clear in one thing about religion, every religion of this world spread by means, but if we go by history, be it Christianity, islam,Buddism or even hinduism spread most effectively only when the rulers of that region become patrons of that specific religion for a period of time.

.
to begin with budhha never started any distinct religion known as Baudhism. He was one of the great atheist indian /hindu sages who gave his version of salvation/moksha/nirvana. The decline begins when budhism became rigid and a pøor clone of hinduism. At the same reformation started in hinduism and many corrupt practices were removed making it popular once again. However real blow felt with muslim invasion and subsequent destruction of universities like nalanda and vikramshila.

.
:wave:Most historians and scholars agree to the fact that Buddhism was already on the verge of extinction when the Islamic invasions took place and these invasions did no good to this religion. Islam was a late entrant into India, and Buddhism was showing unmistakable signs of its decline long before Islam became established in the Gangetic plains, central India, and the northern end of present-day Andhra and Karnataka.During the Muslim Invasion, Bengal and Sind were ruled by Brahminical dynasties but had Buddhist majorities. Buddhism was in a state of decline by that time. The lower caste and outcaste Hindus, who had recently taken refuge in Buddhism, were again subjected to discrimination by the upper caste Hindus.

.
the muslims killed all the learned buddhists from taxila in the west to nalanda in the east thus finishing of buddhism.

.
I am a Jain. Jainism and Budhism are very similar religions. So similar that it is beleived that Lord Budha first took Sanyas under Jain saints. But later started a new religion with some modification.

There are so many Jains in India and are one of the most influential Religions.

therefore i see no reason that Why Jainism survived in India and Budhism did not.

Anything wich says budhism was discrimunated is false.

.
Buddhism is unable to gain popularity in India, mainly due to two reasons:-

FIRSTLY, People realised that, in this era of EXTREMISM.....a non-violent religion like BUDDHISM has no chance of survival.......
The BUDDHISTS learnt their lesson from history well.......

SECONDLY,All religions of the world originated from Hinduism........
Therefore it is quite illogical to practice any other religion.......
Lord Buddha is also regarded as an AVATAR of Lord Vishnu.......
People realized this.....hence the so called "decline" of Buddhism in India......
Even, sensible MUSLIMS in India and all over the world are adopting Hinduism after realizing their "mistake" ;)

.
Though the MUSLIM invaders tried to wipe out BUDDHISM from the INDIAN Subcontinent......It is because of the HINDU rulers that we are even speaking of "Buddhism in India" today......

.
those who want to know why budhism disappeared(don't know if it is the right word) should read about pushyamitra sunga...

those who think budhism is nonviolent should read about how ashoka killed ajivikas and even paid for each head of ajivikas...

Learn some history mate........

King Ashoka finaly adopted BUDDHISM Himself........Though he was very cruel at first, he shunned cruelty after adopting BUDDHISM....

He is the main reason why BUDDHISM spread in southern India.....He even went to places like SRI LANKA to spread BUDDHISM

Read and understand what you are suggesting me, carefully........

Ashoka did kill a lot of people due to various reasons BEFORE ADOPTING BUDDHISM.......

HE supported BUDDHISM like all other HINDU kings....BUT was not a BUDDHIST himself......

AFTER converting to BUDDHISM, he stopped all his killings..........

You cannot show me evidence of Ashoka killing people while spreading BUDDHISM.......

after becoming a budhists he massacred ajivikas..

ashokavadna mentions following:

“At that time, an incident occurred which greatly enraged the king. A follower of the Nirgrantha (Mahavira) painted a picture, showing Buddha prostrating himself at the feet of the Nirgrantha. Ashoka ordered all the Ajivikas of Pundravardhana (North Bengal) to be killed. In one day, eighteen thousand Ajivikas lost their lives. A similar kind of incident took place in the town of Pataliputra. A man who painted such a picture was burnt alive with his family. It was announced that whoever would bring the king the head of a Nirgrantha would be rewarded with a dinara (a gold coin). As a result of this, thousands of Nirgranthas lost their lives.”

As I said earlier.....nowhere it is written that he was a BUDDHIST while he performed such massacre....

BUDDHISM always enjoyed all the HINDU king's patronage......great BUDDHIST Universities(which were destroyed by Islamic invaders) flourished during the rule of HINDU kings.........This doesnot mean that all the HINDU kings converted to BUDDHISM!

BUT when Ashoka realized the futility behind murdering innocent people........He actually converted to BUDDHISM and stopped all his killings.......
This realization is the main reason, why he converted to BUDDHISM.....and thus it is illogical to assume that he continued his killings even after converting.

he did it after he became budhists...budhism was not the second religion of dharmic philosophy....ajivika and nirgrantha were there too...no hindu king ever killed ajivikas and nirgranthas for painting budha prostrating at feet of mahavira...hinduism was santan vedic dharma back then and was not called as hindu dharma...

he stopped killing of ajivikas and nirgranthas only after a budhist monk was killed by mistake....if you think ashoka was hindu while doing this then there is not explaination as to why a hindu king will kill ajivikas for painting that hurts budhist sentiments...

don't confuse ashoka's conversion only with grief of killing people...read the book link above...
jainism(ajivika and nirgrantha) was extremely non violent than budhism and was present since long before budhism...then why did ashoka choose budhism??(read that page in the book)

ashoka is also called as strong protector of sangha who showed no mercy to those who offended budha and budhism...so the kiiling of ajivikas and nirgranthas..
