Sadly in Pakistan, backward tribal thinking keeps on harping on urdu as official language.

This is all the while in our country for the last 70 years (and almost 90 years before 1947):

-- 90% + of ALL documentation / communication in higher Education is in English
-- 90% + of ALL documentation / communication in higher courts is in English
-- 90% + of ALL documentation / communication in army/military is in English
-- 90% + of ALL documentation / communication in ministries is in English
-- 90% + of ALL documentation / communication in corporate sector is in English
-- 90% + of ALL documentation / communication in higher level Police is in English

And yet, small but vocal section of Karachi and Lahore Elite keep on harping about Urdu as "official" language as Urdu.

This is nothing but neo-colonial mindset so prevalent among this small but vocal section of elite.

And why to forget that Pakistan is blessed with expertise in English rivaled only by a handful of regions around the world.

Other people look at us in awe when we can easily switch between English and Urdu and possibly a third language (like Punjabi, Pushto, Sindhi or Balochi).

This type of strength should be encouraged in today's global village.

Instead some of us want to drag us back to 1900 AD.

and some even back to the sand dune Biduin days of 600 AD.

What a sad state of affairs.

We all right in perfect English, that we should replace English with Urdu.

What an irony.

What the heck is wrong with some people.

You must be a retard "thing" for maligning Pakistan like this. :D

Seriously, though, such moves have been tried in the past and they have always failed. This stupid initiative will die its own death too.

India has killed the advantage of English to the maximum( Now Philippines is doing the same ) . First wave was call center , second wave IT , Pakistan should emulate at least this much .

Like it or not, English remains the international language. Not a. The.

It's the truth . In fact i am not sure i would have been working for a IT outsourcing firm ( for clients in western world ) if i had no knowledge of English. English have contributed a lot to propelling many poor people in India to middle class .

Isn't urdu already one of the official languages?

English is anathema to the regressives holding sway in Pakistan these days, and this present attempt is merely another step guided by idiots, of which we have plenty in Pakistan and on PDF, the sad truth be spoken bluntly.

Source? Don't tell me you pulled it from your rear.

Handful? English is the 3rd most spoken language in the world, good Sir.

You English too much.

Proficiency in English is a strength, no doubt. But it doesn't mean that you have to ditch your own language for it. No harm in being bilingual. Government and Supreme Court took a positive step today. Urdu is our national language and should be treated as such.

Death to nationalism -
we must not emulate China Germany or Japan because we are Pakistanis not Chinese German or Japanese -

.
No one is "ditching" anything. Please avoid making claims like this.

No harm in being bilingual. Government and Supreme Court took a positive step today. Urdu is our national language and should be treated as such.

Urdu cannot become true national language.

What is national language anyway. We in Pakistan speak all kinds of languages and switch between them with ease.

Quit living in uni-language world. It is long gone now.

Urdu as language to be national is the same thing as national bird, national flower, national vegetable, national pass time.

I think Pakistan should be officially multilingual, all legal documents, communications, traffic signs etc should be in every language of this country for ex. In Sindh it should be in Urdu,Sindhi and English, maybe even add Gujarati,Pashto and Marwari cause of those communities here

In Punjab they could do it in Punjabi,Urdu and English and so on and so forth in every province and territory of Pakistan.

We need to go multilingual officially, but not just on paper like India but in action like Canada which is officially bilingual and goes to great length and details to enforce it, though I suppose it's considered a nuisance by Anglo Canadians and immigrants and it's also quite costly.

I don't know what the total cost of becoming a multilingual federation officially would be, would definitely go into the millions if not billions, so may not be a wise decision from a financial PoV but definitely a good decision from a nation building PoV but I guess being pragmatic is more important

Lets stay at emulating a language model that worked for China, Germany and Japan -

It’s a shame when people don’t even try to promote the national language and even try to sabotage every attempt made to promote it.

It has had 70 years to be promoted to its strength.

Don't try to live in 1800s
