Diriliş Ertuğrul: Turkish views needed

Banned in KSA and UAE, must be good.

Hell yeah! If thats the barometer of success :rofl:

2-) Kind of There was a Ottoman Serial named "Magnificent Century" and Erdogan openly critisized the serial a few times. However with Diriliş, he never critisized it and visited the Set and the actors/actresses. Also, Soundtrack of the Serial used by AKP in the elections times...so there is a general perception that Diriliş Serial is acquainted with a certain political ideology.

I have randomly seen some Turkish dramas and there are lots of scenes where characters are shown consuming alcohol when its not even necessary or a bottle of whiskey in front of a woman who is making a distressful call. It feels at times the drama is trying way too hard to prove its secular ideas. In this show, I dont see any such thing and to me its refreshing. Anyway it is just a show and we just enjoy it as such.

Nah, it is just life. Like it is a kind of custom to drink Rakı with your friends when you break up with your girlfriend. And we have "Meyhane" culture. Alcohol, was a part of life but Erdogan kind of tries to erase it but with no avail.

@T-123456 @xenon54 @Deliorman @UkroTurk wish we could do something like this in the future. :-)

That may be true, but arguing that it is art imitating life is no excuse. The ubiquity of alcoholic beverages on the screen normalizes it, and it should not be normalized. Not just because Turkey is a Muslim country, but also because alcohol is harmful.

Hollywood and mainstream American/British TV are guilty as sin when it comes to drinking. With all the Martinis he chugs in every second scene, James Bond would be barely able to walk straight, let alone drive at high speeds and fly helicopters.

I have never understood the double standards applied to alcoholic beverages and cigarettes. We seem to have recognized the adverse effects of smoking, but continue to promote drinking. It makes no sense.

For the record, I do not believe in a ban on alcoholic beverages in a country like Turkey. But I do think there should be limits imposed on its promotion.

That's your point of view and i respect it. However you can't impose your belief on to masses with censorship. There are limits, like they can't do advertisements any more and state brought very heavy taxes on the alcohol. So, people are mostly making their own alcohol in their homes. However when this rotten president leaves the office, we expect everything to become normal again.

The fact is that ALL governments have values that they either promote, discourage, or even ban (censor) in the media. Take for example hate speech, racism, or white nationalism. I am not equating these to drinking. But to say that "we can't impose our beliefs on the masses with censorship" is not true. Countries can, and they do.

People making their own alcohol at home, drinking with friends, even drinking in public at restaurants and bars is their own business. I for one do not believe that it is the state's business to force people to stop drinking - not in a society where drinking is commonplace.

I am only talking about its promotion in the mass media. I do respect your views on this. But I am genuinely curious to know if you see the equivalence between smoking and drinking. Most "Western" media have an unofficial ban on the gratuitous depiction of smoking on the screen (unless it is critical to the plot). Given that alcohol can also be harmful (at both the personal health and social levels), do you not agree that the same standard should be applied to drinking as smoking?

Of course but it's not up to us but physiologists, doctors, sociologists, to decide.
