Did we shoot our own passenger plane?

Can we please refrain from posting such things until we have a much idea what happened?

Why would we even be firing AA in Tehran! That doesn’t even make sense.

I am supposed to believe ONE fighter jet passed through ALL Iranian air defenses and reached Tehran and decided to hang out by the airport?

If it was indeed shot down by AA, then Iran needs to court martial the officers involved because you have to be full on retarded to think ONE aircraft made it all the to Tehran and just HAPPENED to be hanging out at the airport and oh yeah has an RCS of a damn passenger plane.

Hang all the officers involved in this mess.

You are missing the point of this post, this is NOT about whether the plane was shutdown or not but about why it was allowed to take off.

Why would there be a NOTAM? There was no military activity in Tehran area and it was 5 hours after the missile strikes that took place in Southwestern Iran.

The aircraft was went down 8 mins after take off, it’s not like it went down near the border.

@TheImmortal you make good points but from safety stand point, if you are anticipating retaliation or attack, you take measures to protect civilians.

Also it does not have to be a sophisticated IADS response. You could have an ordinary operator of an AAA mis identifying and firing. Note that when everyone is on alert, the risk for accident rises due to stress.

Consider this scenario:
A surface to air missile with active seeker can lock onto anything fall into its radar cone and pursue. In a noisy environment and clutter, you will have an uncertainty associated with friend from foe. A missiles that was aimed at foe may get redirected if another plane falls into its envelope. Any civilian plane is neither equipped nor as integrated into IADS as friendly military aircraft. It is therefore a rational safety per caution to temporarily prevent commercial planes from flying.

Also, protocols from ground up should be designed around protection of civilians first. There is no ethics in punishment when there is obvious prevention.

No. I find it hard to believe Iranian AA would see an object with such massive RCS, climbing altitude within Iranian airspace near Iranian airport and near AA systems and for them to see that as a threat. It's non-sensical. If I'm wrong, those officers are morons on the highest degree. No enemy jet or missile would ever, under any circumstance be climbing altitude near Tehran.

Seems so. Iran also refuses to hand over the black box to Ukraine.

Point raised by the fellow is right! iran launched the missile strikes...and certainly would be expecting worse...amercian airstrike...why the passenger plane took off.

This aircraft just took off from Tehran, it's introduction systems were on. there is no way that our air defense would mistake it with an intruder aircraft. Iran has a two minutes delay before firing missiles, and even for interception we wait till it gets away from civilian flights.

furthermore, pilot was returning to Tehran and gradually reducing the altitude which means he still had control over his aircraft.

Boeing 737s have been proven to be flying coffins, nothing more.

My problem is precisely with: why did it fly to begin with when we are in a state which expecting air attacks. I place blame on Iranian Air Traffic authorities. It's a simple risk management measure to temporarily Gault flights till safety can be guaranteed. This regardless of whether it was shut down or not.
