What's new

Dhaka more expensive than many South Asian cities: EIU

We have all been to Kolkata - mairi bolcchee!!

Dude WTF ?! Kolkata has its charms but c'mon, stop this d*ck measuring.

Have you EVER been to Dhaka?:lol:

Here's a few shots to whet your appetite, these are mostly older suburbs of Dhaka dating from the 1950's except the first few shots. Newer planned suburbs of Dhaka will be far larger in scale than whatever Newtown in Kolkata will ever be. But that doesn't diminish our love for Kolkata, it is what it is, warts and all. You obviously don't hang out in architecture or urban development circles.

First 9 pics are taken in different angles... even smaller city like Vijayawada got bigger and better apartments..

Their own doing I'd say. Anti-industrialist stance of the communist govt.

The side effect is that Calcutta itself is a whole lot cleaner these days. No industry in the city.

But the payback is coming and can happen at any moment. Intellectual capital-based service jobs which they have now is fleeting and can move at a moment's whim if a lower cost location can be found within India (say Bhubaneswar or cities in UP).

Not so with capital machinery-based industry like what we have in Dhaka and environs.

It's already happening I guess, Kolkata's population is declining at a steady rate, rendering its worth equal to that of a district town. What I have heard, cities like Bangalore and Hyderabad are the most popular destinations of West Bengali IT professionals to work after graduation because of the huge dearth of white collar jobs in their home town.

Sure... Anything that floats your boat

Until there is LDC Quota...

Exports await a blow

The situation there is pretty much evident, it was ranked as second least livable city in the world...despite all cherry picking & long exposure shots posted by Bangladeshis here...

But being Bangladeshis, you can expect them to be in denial.

Lol true, I searched those...that's some six buildings there, pretty much normal looking with some 13-14 floors.

I have no idea what is he boasting about...

I am all about root level people living decent life rather then some fancy tower.
Poor people from these 8,000 shanties who lost everything doesn't care about how shiny the Dhaka road is.

This is all they care about, tall & shiny buildings completely disregarding the Dhuravi slums sitting right beside it. LOL. Don't know what world they're living in.

As far I'm concerned India, namely Kolkata is a living, certified dirt pool. There are numerous BBC docs covering it's shit workers going deep into sewages filtering for bits of gold and silver.
And here they are talking about flashy buildings.

You guys serious?!
Take a look at our glorious Dhaka:
https://bdnews24.com/bangladesh/2018/03/12/fire-burns-4000-shanties-in-mirpur

I don't like the way you guys being totally blind and feel good at your comfort while ignoring real people suffering.
And if people like you never existed, BD would be much more developed by now.
I am all about root level people living decent life rather then some fancy tower.

What is your point? Have anyone here denied the existence of slum in Dhaka or the suffering going on there? Which city in south Asia don't have slum? There are even bigger slum than Dhaka in some Indian cities and I am sure fire also break out there time to time. But I have never seen any Indian countering their compatriot's defence of their city by posting those city's slum misery. Are you trying to take a moral high ground here?

. .
Only 24% of our urban population lives in slums, against 55% of yours.

You host one of the largest slums after Orangi Town. Never does BD appear in the list of top 10 largest slums.

Your country is associated with poo swamps, shanti shacks and lack of hygiene etiquette among other things. If Dhaka city is the 'least liveable' because of it's pop density, then so be it, it's better than walking into a breath of sh(t. You have slums in your major cities such as Old Delhi and Bumbay.

I do sympathize with the slum dwellers but frankly, they are occupying the place illegally. The land is owned by the government and some local goons rent these land to those poor folks. These accidents are not really surprising as these places are not built for proper residence. When the local authorities try to evict them, it becomes a hot media topic.

All i am saying is reality is different for people living in tallest tower in Mirpur and people living in Mirpur slum. People from slum aren't that passionate about shiny road and tall building.

And if people living in Mirpur tower cared more about people living down in slum rather then feeling good and argue who has the shiniest tower, everything would change including rise of more middle class, better government etc.

Because your slums are fragmented ? Or undocumented ?

The statistics is pretty much clear. It's 55%, not one or two percentage more than India. So shove it !!

If Dhaka city is the 'least liveable' because of it's pop density

Livability rankings include factors other than population density. Read up !!!
