. . . .
Of the most livable cities, I have been to Vienna, Helsinki and Hamburg.

Of the most improved, I have been to Bratislava and lived almost a decade in Dubai.

And of course, I and born and brought up in Dhaka.

The most pressing technical issues in my opinion is the decentralization and traffic. If I compare my experience, it most certainly has to start with getting my universities and industries getting out of Dhaka. Usually these 2 entities pull the most people and hence, they would be obliged to comply if they are shifted. Education and income are basic necessities after all. Just ensure they have all the services around them (hospitals, restaurants, transportation etc.) and they would not have anything to complain. Also, what is very important is that they maintain the same salary level as they do in Dhaka. There is a notion centering around the capital city is that it caters for higher income than other states and cities.

Traffic has been a lasting problem in the country anyway. Unless the bigger U-loops and flyovers are constructed, conditions would remain as it is. The metro rail is the only hope I see as of now, given people use it efficiently and govt. can create a strong awareness for using less cars. That is going to be a challenge because its usually our culture to stick to our comfort zone ie. have a driver drive for us which gets easy instead of waiting in lines or getting squashed in crowd.

I love Vienna (esp as huge fan of Mozart)....the culture and presence of the city. Their tram system is quite excellent too.

BTW are you in stockholm?

The tram system is good and I loved the hilly place from where you can see the whole city. Its at the corner of Vienna.

No, a place 3.5 hrs south from Stockholm.

Most Dhakaites never left the country and saw western cities only in the Hollywood movies. They will always rate Dhaka low no matter what.
Dhaka needs to improve its traffic and the score will fly..

Once the metro is fully built and the roads/flyovers are completed(circa 2030), then you will see Dhaka move up the list. But the high population density means that it will always struggle compared to other capital cities in South Asia and so I expect it to still be ranked lower than other cities like Delhi or Islamabad.

BD needs to fully embrace decentralisation along the lines of other countries. The current government moves to create Special Economic Zones(SEZ) all over the country is a good step in the right direction.

Next time you are in the neighbourhood, go and visit Budapest. And if you can take a little more time, Esztergom, right on the border with Slovakia. Or you can go south, across the Julian Alps, and see the city of love, Ljubljana. You don't know what you've missed.

Gazipur is heavily under utilized. Situation will improve a lot after BRT (Bus rapit transit) connect gazipur. A lot of people and business will move down there. Sock Exchange building is in Khilket now instead of Motijheel.

Most factories already moved out of Dhaka.

After Damascus, Dhaka is the worst city to live in by earlier reports... this just proved all the disappointment I have about people in my country. Even neighbor countries like India and Pakistan have good cities built with years of planning.

On the side note.... Kuwait City did improve. Yay! Long live Kuwait.
And it's not the money or big nice buildings... it's how clean, organized and disciplined people are.

You get fines starting 10000tk if you spit on streets... lots of Bengalis, Pakistanis and Indians as usual had to pay em.

Of course I've been to Budapest in that grand tour I did (and what lovely places Buda and Pest were!). I went down the whole Danube pretty much to see what ole Strauss jr. was inspired so much by.

Next time I plan to do an aegean + adriatic coastline tour from Greece/Turkey all they way up through Croatia and then hit Slovenia on the way to Eastern coast of Italy.

Yep. Good going. Dhaka beat out two warzones and Lagos.

It's going alright. It is not that bad living in Dhaka except the traffic Jams. It takes 2 hours to cross 5 km by Car because of the traffic Jam. It makes me suicidal being struck in traffic Jam of Dhaka. I would have voted Dhaka as the worst city too.
