The chief military spokesperson should not be commenting on national economy, Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal said on Friday – a day after Major General Asif Ghafoor said, “If Pakistan’s economy is not bad, it’s not good either”.

“DG ISPR [the director general, Inter-Services Public Relations] should refrain from commenting on national economy,” said the minister while speaking to journalists informally in Washington on Friday. “Irresponsible statements could hurt Pakistan’s global image,” he added.

Maj Gen Ghafoor made the comment in an interview with a private TV channel on Thursday – a day after army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa voiced concerns at the country’s ‘sky high’ debt and called for broadening tax base and bringing in financial discipline to break the ‘begging bowl’.

Addressing a seminar on ‘Interplay of Economy and Security’ in Karachi on Wednesday, Gen Qamar said Pakistan’s economy was showing mixed indicators as “the growth has picked up, but the debts are also sky high”.

Conversely, Iqbal, who is currently touring the United States, said Pakistan’s economy was much more stable as compared to the situation in 2013.

“We have seen a rise in imports as the industrial sector is investing in the power sector. There is nothing to be alarmed about,” he added.

“Revenue generation has witnessed a twofold increase because of the improvement in the tax collection system.”

He said Pakistan’s current development budget was its biggest in the country’s history.

“We don’t need to seek a bailout package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF),” he added. “The government has allocated more funds and resources for security purposes.”

Analysts say the apparent spat show growing unease in civil-military relationship. Earlier this month, the interior minister also had a tiff with Rangers when he was denied entry into Islamabad’s accountability courts by paramilitary troops.

Incensed by the incident, Ahsan said he would not allow a “state within the state” and ordered an inquiry into deployment of the Rangers outside the courts as the administration had denied it had called in the paramilitary troops.

He had threatened to resign if he could not find out who had deployed the Rangers when deposed premier Nawaz Sharif was appearing before the accountability court in connection with a corruption reference against him.

Later the DG ISPR said the Rangers were deployed at the courts due to security threats. “It is not compulsory for every order to be written,” he said while referring to the deployment order.

However, he defended the Rangers saying the paramilitary troops performing their duty at the court should be appreciated.

“A soldier deployed [somewhere] performs his duty, and if he is told not to allow irrelevant people… it is possible [to consider] someone who does not have [credentials] as an irrelevant person,” he had said.

Interior minister’s ‘unwarranted attack on ISPR’

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan termed Iqbal’s statement an “unwarranted attack on ISPR”, saying the statement was part of the ‘Dawn leaks’ agenda.

If you politicians were not I for and totally useless the military would have no need.
You politicians spend all your time plotting to rib the nation as opposed to building it so when someone says fix your house...I dread of fixing it you point fingers at them.

. .
He's pakistani as same as iqbal sahab. Why cant he say if he sees something wrong

The minister is right in many ways when you comment some thing which is not your core work you will get the same questions but this time it will be your core work related , Army should avoid all these talks and specially the DG ISPR i dont know who has made him General but he is making life of institution tough . For soldiers which are dying are our young brothers and are part of society but one question here is , Why they are paying the price where as the top generals or the ones who created all this mess are enjoying golf and foreign nationality .

.
Army is a National Institution , so they can raise their concerns .. no issue there
It is internal issue of Pakistan but would like to say one thing, even though Army is National Institution; it is sub-ordinate to People elected Govt and they should not go beyond their duty of defending country from external threats.

Pakistani people don't know but nawaz cut a deal with Raheel sharif and gave him control over foreign policy hence the reason we didn't have a foreign minister in those days for years under raheel.
I stand with our minister but nawaz has quite terribly screwed up, it's not about nawaz it's about Quaids vision which is being played here.

The same military which failed itself in 1965 because of ayub Khan , the same guy Jinnah had ordered not be promoted further became the president of Islamic republic.

Our interior Minister should have resigned today if there was an iota of decency in him. But yes, that would be expecting too much from him.

Suck it up. You and your gang brought it to this point and I'm glad the military rattling it up.
Military hs no right to step out of its domain and talk nonsense on issues that are'nt under their domain.
men in uniform better keep a silence instead of talking in media and social media.

What about DG ISPR , why not ask him resign on making controversial tweets yet again after Dawns leaks issues.

How dare you question the holy cows.
They are above law and untouchables.

DG ISPR tweeted about issues as comes under his job description. It being controversial does not make it a failure of his.
Yet the interior Minister has failed in providing security, delayed the court decision today from which he removed the Rangers and created so much drama. Now where is his responsibilities and his job description which he so enjoyed reminding everyone about.

He should better resign and become a politician or economist before making such idiotic statements on social media.

Where in the world Generals talks on such matters. Go and dare to ask Indian Army Chief to make any such comments , and Babus and Neetas gona make him an example.
It is only in Pakistan that holy cows can do any thing and comments on any thing in media. They are behaving like politicians.

DG ISPR should better keep is mouth shut.
We still remember how he licked the feet and accepted the civilian supremacy in dawn Leaks case.

lol I know a senior civilian officer who used to be disgusted with egos of the generals so ( as he told ) made his mind up and decided each time a General comes to his office , his staff will sit the General on the sweepers chair outside his office and he used to sit there looking up at the ceiling with his aide standing by the side.
Now we know everything happens for a reason :lol:
