Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory and Stainless steel maker Jindal Stainless (Hisar) Ltd earlier this month signed Licensing agreements for Transfer of Technology (TOT) of high nitrogen steel (HNS) which can be widely used in various armour applications thus providing a major breakthrough in technology for armour applications in India.

Indigenous HNS technology is a step forward for Army’s Quest for lighter and high-performance armour materials compared to materials used by them. DMRL developed HNS technology for armour applications and Vishal. improved ballistic performance compared to Rolled Homogenous Armour (RHA).

HNS is dubbed as Dream material which has a wide possibility of applications to cater to the development of various products. HNS is not only tough but also is non-magnetic and is resistance to corrosion.

The cost of HNS is 40 % less when compared to Rolled Homogenous Armour (RHA) and can be used for development future Infantry Combat Vehicle ICV, helicopters, naval boats etc where protection is required against AK 47, 7.62 balls, 7.62 AP, 12.7 AP projectiles.etc.
