Apparently close to 100 Saudi Arabian students are involved in the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts in Houston and a similar number is expected to be involved in the aftermath of Irma.

They even founded a relief organization called "Hand by Hand". The Saudi Arabian students that is. That's encouraging to hear.

A lot of really incredible volunteer work has come out of the devastation that Harvey caused in Houston. People really came together. Despite how people feel, Americans and immigrants in the US really come together in times of disasters like these.

Most of Southern Florida is basically screwed to use a less flattering word. Lowland most of it.

The appeal of the Sunshine state is always hampered by these hurricanes, especially southern Florida as it's the first area that feels the brunt of every one of these. Every time we head down there with the family or with my buddies on a fishing trip, we plan it during the middle of the winter, to be sure to avoid the sweltering humidity and obviously this stuff. It's a necessary yearly temporary escape from the brutal colds of Boston!

BTW when I last visited I ventured out of the less tourist-friendly areas and decadence was not exactly the word that I was looking for back then.

You know, in the days of my youth wasted on youth lol, I have to admit I did some crazy stupid stuff like that and a couple of times I paid the price for being young and stupid lol. How about this one? This isn't Irma BTW.

I live in east central Florida and things have been pretty wild but not catastrophic. Everyone expected it to make a direct hit on Tampa but the past couple of hours it turned to go more inland. I am looking out of my back window right now and a large part of a fence was gone. In between one of the bands I went outside and saw a lot debris all over the street. I lost electricity for a couple of hours but I got it back about 4 hours ago.

I did not evacuate like I did with Hurricane Matthew last year. I am going to go out early tomorrow morning and walk around to see what kind of real damage it did.

If all you lost was a section of fence, you did well. Even if you lost a window or some roof shingles you've still come out ahead. Good for you.

I just got off the phone with my buddies and all 3 of them and families are fine, hardly any damage, lost power for a little and the most important thing to them (after their families and their homes) is their boats which are like taking out a 2nd mortgage in some cases and they're fine. They survived winds and the pre and storm surge which is a good thing because I have a date with one of them in January to go tuna fishing!
