Defence ministry clears Goa Shipyard Limted to build frigates
The Union defence ministry has officially approved Goa Shipyard Limted's (GSL) collaboration with Russia's United Ship Building to build two guided-missile stealth frigates for the Indian Navy.

The ministry's move to nominate GSL has irked Larsen & Toubro and Reliance Defence and Engineering, who were keen on bagging the prestigious contract. Sources said the two private sector shipyards have expressed their displeasure to the ministry.

"The Naval HQ has written to the Russian authorities seeking technical and cost details for building guided-missile stealth frigates. Thereafter, GSL will start discussions. The private sector may have the capacity, but it is yet to prove its capability," a source said.

The defence ministry was forced to turn to GSL and the two private sector shipyards as the major public sector shipyards were tied up executing current orders. Russian delegations have already visited the Vasco-based shipyard and cleared its facilities for construction of the frigates, which will be equipped with sensors and weapons, including the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.

During a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 2016 Brics Summit, the two countries inked a deal to purchase four guided-missile stealth frigates from Russia. According to the agreement, two of the frigates will come from Russia, while the other two will be constructed in India, sources said.

Why arent these guys even getting orders? Their shipyards are more modern than some of the PSUs.

Like what's the point of taking any risk in this sector, if they're going to continue to favor public sector companies, some of which have order till 2030+?

I have never seen a major country like India, stifle it's own potential.

These private shipyards...should tie up with foreign builders and start designing the ships and show it to the navy and the world...if their design is superior and comes at a reasonable price...then MOD will have to accept!!
You can't wait and hope things will happen...they have to be proactive!!

Reliance - PIPAV already have 4 Talwar Class orders...
They need to deliver them -- then should next order be given.

Greedy Baniya(s)

Why do they need to do that? When pretty much every other shipyard is bloated, overloaded? Their shipyards are more modern, newer, bigger, yet they get some shit patrol ship orders? Why take a risk in getting into this field, when you'll continually favor the one that get's the hand out?

As far as tie up, etc. That's all these guys do in the private sector. Bharat Forge bought out whole artillery assembly lines and brought it to India. Has newer T72 tank barrels, etc. Yet, OFB get's an automatic inclusion into FICV? And gets BMP2
upgrade without no competition? Why? Why is India making things more difficult on itself? Would you rather Hindustan Motors, Premier have their way up to 2017?

Surely they are True Baniya(s)

It doesnt anymore. First 2 were supposed to come from Russia, the other 2 was supposed to go the private sector.

The GSL dose not have much room to build new dry docks to build larger ships, not unless they open another yard , i know they were considering a place in lotolium but am unsure how far that has proceed.
