Ahead of the Union Budget, Defence Minister AK Antony today said his ministry has spent over 70% of the modernisation funds allocated to it for the current fiscal.

The Defence Ministry has been sanctioned Rs 69,199 crore for capital expenditure outlay for finalising acquisition of major items such as 10 C-17 heavy-lift aircraft and 145 ultra-light Howitzers.

"Already by December 31, we had spent 66% of the budget. This is a record. By January, it will be more than 70%. From our side, we are spending all money for modernisation," he told reporters here.
The total budgetary allocation was pegged at Rs 1,64,415 crore for the Defence Ministry.

From the Rs 69,199 crore capital outlay, the army got Rs 18,986 crore, Navy Rs 5,688 crore, naval fleet Rs 7,320 crore and Air Force Rs 30,699 crore.

India is looking to spend over $100 billion in defence procurements in the next five years with several big ticket items such as six conventional submarines and 126 Medium-Multirole Combat Aircraft (M-MRCA) to be procured by it.

It's not great but, hey, it's a step in the right direction. Maybe Antony can really earn his Sainthood afterall.

IA is lacking behind there are no second thoughts about it and patience is the thing which we are having for almost so many years and now we are loosing it ......

I personally thing both IA and IAF should learn some planing skills from IN first b4 buying anything in future.

so it effectively states that we save 30%?

and do the funds transfer over to the next year?

its both good and somewhat bad at the same time.

What happened to F-INSAS? Is it still alive?

Wait for defence expo 2012 to see the final version of F INSAS

Rifle is ready and other things too the reason why we are not getting much news about it is bcoz it is divided into many sub components.

Whatever man, next year budget should be more than 1,85,000/- crore Rs looking at the inflation and requirement and economic progress..
What u all have to say about it ???

is M-777 deal final?
Any idea who else were in competition for M-777?

The important thing is that the largest recipient is the Air force,.... A lesson that Pakistan Military should look and learn before its too late.

IAF is marginally faster than IA dude. Only IN seems to be bolstering capabilities fast enough. both Army and IAF need to throw their stupid egos and obsession with everything foreign into the trash and move on like Navy.

This is the first time IAF has gotten such a big chunk. It has always been the Army that gets major share of the deal. IAF modernization has been pending since last 2 decades. We were supposed to have replaced everything by 2005-06 in IAF. But because of economic limitations in 90s, we froze our IAF modernization. Now what you see "big chunk" is only compensation for 20 years.

India, China and Russia will remain a Land-focused military structure. In the foreseeable future at least. We cannot be a Sea-focused force like USN or air-focused Force like Israel at of yet simply because of our terrain and our military doctrines. IAF and IN always provide support to IA. Usually it is always the military that spearheads any conflict.

IAF and IN would have had a significant role if we had threats in IOR of sizable proportions.

It does get carried over. All Indian government departments have to return back unused fund allocations at the end of the financial year, wiping their slate clean, and the returned amount is considered for any future expenses.

In regards to the M-777 this particular acquisition is through FMS as such there were no other compting guns as IA analysed their needs and what best suited these=M-777. Just like with C-17 deal with IAF where C-17 was the only machine that fitted the IAF's bill.

This is a major reason why progress on the M-777 deal has been so slow- recent very strict anti graft rules make single-tender procurments a bloody minefiled for all parties involved with numerous hurdles having to be cleared.

I mean there are so many deals hanging why don't they sign it ? 22 Heavy attack chopper deal has got a winner but the deal hasn't been signed yet, M777 deal is also almost done but not signed yet, 197 light chopper deal could have been signed as trials were over in 2010 itself, basic trainer deal result is also out but no deal yet. I mean if they haven't negotiated the deal yet they can always spent money on the follow on orders. For follow on orders you don't have to do much work. Follow-on orders for C130j, P8i, C17, Mi17V5 and i think Phalcon if the follow on order for this awacs haven't been placed yet.
