PANAJI: Defence minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday said most defence deals are stuck because of lobbying, vested interests, and kickbacks that happened during the last 10 years of Congress rule at the Centre. He said his priority is to clear the controversy and speed up acquisition in a transparent manner.

"My target is to clear all weapons purchase deals one by one on a priority basis, beginning next week," said the country's new defence minister, adding that he will also strengthen the army's fighting capability, logistics, and infrastructure. He further said he will strengthen the armed forces with pre-emptive measures that discourage cross-border firing on the line of control.

He said India need not worry about Pakistan or China or any other country as the country's defences are strong.

Speaking to party workers on his maiden visit to Goa after being sworn into the Union Cabinet, he said that after being extensively briefed over the last two days, he has realized that India has no need to worry about any other country.

Parrikar, who is on a five day visit to Goa, told mediapersons that everybody knows what happened in the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal and there was a question mark raised on the acquisition of fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF). He refused to elaborate on the fighter aircraft deal.

"Most (defence) acquisitions made have some controversy. I don't want to go into the details, but my job is to clear the controversy," he said, adding that the more you go in for tightening on corruption, the more you raise the question, and the deals get more complex, and one should adopt a transparent method where no questions are raised.

Asked to react on incursions in Arunachal Pradesh by the Chinese military, Parrikar said this type of incursion and crossing the imaginary line of control happens many times in many sectors, but it is taken care of on the same day or within a couple of days. "Except on one or two occasions, there has been no serious incident." He added the ministry will take steps to avoid such incidents in the future.

He said he will look at the country being able to produce indigenous weapons based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'make in India' concept. He also said that revamping of the DRDO is on the cards, but "as of now I have not taken any decision. Right now, I want them to perform". He further said the ministry will concentrate on improving training capacity, and filling up vacancies of officers in the army.

Parrikar was given a rousing welcome at the Dabolim airport by Goa chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar and the state cabinet.

I just hope he carries the momentum Jaitley initiated and offsets all wrongs of the pathologically inept Antony.
We finally have an IITian Defense minister.:victory:

AK49 is also IITian LOL.

Wasn't Antony a Bachelor in arts and law?

The worst defence minister ever: AK Antony's tenure, the longest for a defence minister, has seen scams, crises, unpreparedness : Special Report - India Today

Two years ago, an outraged vice-admiral strode into Defence Minister A.K. Antony'swood-panelled office on thefirst floor of South Block. He wanted to know why Antony had signed on a policy that would exclude submariners and aviators from holding the top job in the Navy. It would make submariners and aviators second-class citizens and destroy recruitment, he warned. Antony, the vice-admiral recalls, held his head in his hands and sank into his chair. He later struck the policy down. But he had exposed his embarrassing cluelessness at what he had almost allowed.

WTH
I can only shudder when I think what would have happened if Congress remained in power.:fie:

Antony almost destroyed our defence forces. Someone needs to tell the Babus(MoD officials), top army officers and DRDO guys that you are on the verse of collapse. Give something or fed away.

That after remaining DM for 5 and half years at that point of time , is really embarrassing. :hitwall:

Lets hope new defense minister does something quickly and not linger over it for years. Giving comments in media is different than signing the contracts.

Again you guys blaming AK Anthony fail to see who is the real cause of the mismanagements? Congress is protecting Sonia an Rahul. Wake up. Place the blame squarely on those who are responsible for it. All of you blame AK and MMS, yet conveniently overlook or fail to acknowledge the facts.

AK & MMS are Dhritrashtras who kept silent when Bharat Maa was being raped. They deserve equal punishment. They should goto jail with Antonio maino and serve her pizza in kothadi.

Let's get some forward movement on:

Rafale
CH-47F
AH-64E
A330 MRTT
S-70B
PHALCON AWACS (+A-50EI aircraft)
Mounted Gun System
Avro Replacment (single vender situation now exists, use his discretionary power to clear this as it is an urgent requirement)
Follow on C-17s

(that's about $25 BN USD worth of deals)

Once these deals are signed I'll be able to relax and if Mr Parrikar can somehow find a way to revive the M777 deal I'll be over the moon.

These are just the urgent requirements of the Indian defence forces, the next lot of procurements that need to see the light of day:

Follow-on order of P-8Is
P-17As
Mine Counter-Measures Vessels (an urgent requirement but I don't see this being cleared anytime soon given the Attorney General's findings)
LHD/LPD
FSS
Ensure the MTA is on track
FICV (revived/fast tracked)
F-INSAS (again an urgent requirement but doesn't seem to be going anywhere right now, I'm sure there are issues the Def Min can address on this matter)
IAC-2 cleared and construction begun
21 BAE Hawks for the Surya Kiran team

Then there is the need for the new DM to push for the SOCOM.

This all needs to be done in the next 3-4 years (I must be leaving a lot out but this is off the top of my head).

He's got a mammoth task in front of him, let's hope he doesn't let us down.
