Defence brass split over French Mirage upgrade deal

2.4 bil for an upgrade? you could just by new fighter jets for the same the Mirage 2000 is India's primary strike fighter but they could replace that with a F-15 strike eagle

French fries are too pricey..

When they are asking so much for upgrades, who knows what they will demand in the middle of the project..? They have already shown us their attitude in Scorpene..

I would rather take a F-18 than a rafale.. Americans deliver on time and in agreed budget..

The F-35 program participants won't agree with you

I honestly doubt if the Americans would be willing to give the F-15 to India. It also has a high price tag. But a very good bird

You can't let go all the years of experience you gained in that aircraft, inducting new platform will require some time to get acquainted with. :agree:
If we order new aircrafts say Gripen.Mig35 to replace them, they will be ready by 2014 and we can get 50 aircrafts by 2017. By 2020, we can get plenty of hours experience and we can retire the mirages then. Like the same way as we retire Viraat after we get some experience on Vikadi. Though the case is different for aircrafts, not a bad idea right?

buy 3 sqdn su-34 which has good ground attack ability.

Or make su30mki much lethal by inheriting Su34 charecteristics to it!!!

What are you talking about? If India requested it I have no doubt they would BE MORE THAN WILLING to make more money from India. They have offered other offensive tech why not this?

If that is the case, why didn't the Americans offer the F-15 variants along with the F-16 and F-18 during MMRCA? And actually, only a handful of countries (US allies) operate the F-15 variants. It is a very formidable aircraft.

MMRCA= Medium multirole capable aircraft. F-15 belongs to heavy class like our Su-30MKi's.

We don't need F-Series as we already have Sukhoi 30MKI, Now even better with Brahmos. Our requirement was MMRCA and 5th Generation. For MMRCA ( Rafale/Typhoon are worlds best). For 5th Generation (We already have deal of PAK FA - Russia / FGFA - Russia+India / AMCA - India ).

Also We have MIG-29 for Naval Air Base and Dessault Mirage 2000. MIG 21 will be replace by HAL Tejas gradually.

Hence, We don't need anything more in Air Craft from U.S. or any country as these deals will complete our requirement.

Better to buy more rafales and keep the 2000 to as it wont matter much and the squ strength wont go down abd the experience will stay too

F-15 SE belongs to heavy class of fighters and has RCS of around 15 Sq.m. Not a medium class fighter to fit the bill.

By 2020, We will have

300-400 Sukhoi 30 MKI
100-200 Rafale / Typhoon
200 Hal Tejas
100-150 MIG 29 + MIRAGE 2000
100-200 PAKFA / FGFA - ( If By 2015-16 as scheduled, they start production)

- MIG 21 will be replaced by Tejas in phased manner.

1,000++ = 4th + 4.5th + 5th Generation Air Craft Fighter will be more than enough for India.

Yes, we won't be able to produce more than 20 FGFAs per year, so we won't see >100 FGFAs before 2022-23.

Given the fact, production of Pak-FA will start from 2015, not FGFA. FGFA production won't start before 2017. And there are reports that India will import 50 Pak-FAs before starting productions of FGFAs.
