@doppelganger - There was one instance where the Russians did not truly fight - Afghanistan. Many top commanders protested the lack of strong and excessive force against the native population. But the USSR was a broken and defeated one - the one led by Gorbachev. Gone was the ruthlessness. Without that, you just can't beat the Afghans. Or any Muslim state for that matter.
