Death for 11, life sentence for 20 in Godhra train burning case

NEW DELHI: A special court on Tuesday pronounced the death penalty for 11 convicted in the Godhra train burning case. 20 others have been awarded the life sentence.

Thirty-one people were on February 22 convicted and 63 others, including the main accused Maulvi Umarji, were acquitted by a special court here in the 2002 Godhra train burning incident that left 59 people dead and triggered violence in Gujarat that had claimed the lives of over 1200 people, mainly Muslims.

The court acquitted prime accused Umarji while other prominent accused Haji Billa and Rajjak Kurkur were convicted.



Scientific evidence, statement of witnesses, circumstantial and documentary evidence placed on record formed the basis of the judgement.

The trial conducted inside the Sabarmati Central Jail here began in June 2009 with the framing of charges against 94 accused in the carnage that had triggered widespread communal riots in Gujarat.

The accused have been charged with criminal conspiracy and murder in burning of the S-6 coach of the train on February 27, 2002 near Godhra, about 125 km from here in which 59 people were killed.

One must evolve to get over a Tit for Tat mentality. The issue should not be about victims' families getting closure BUT just as one flushes out our morning ablution products the vermins of human kind must be cleaned off from the earth for other HUMAN to Survive peacefully. Now the other humans have to work harder to feed those who are to undergo LIFE in prison; if guilty, HANG ALL, no hang for some and life imprisonment for some, the Judiciary is just some white man's crap system

Great news!! Justice finally delivered. So goodbye to all conspiracy theories which stated that the train caught fire due to blast in cylinder or stove when some karsewaks were trying to cook food and all that crap.

Justice delay but not denied! no. of hindu and muslims were killed in riots. which was due to this hatting monsters. however really need more harmony between both as the grievance and bad dreams of riots are still in mind of all. Islam is considering pease not to put people to peace forever.

But any way this case and the subsequent cases on the post-Godhra riots will be lost in the labyrinth of the Indian judicial system and I dont punishment will be served anytiime soon (or even later)

Actually when BBC world news reported it they said the Indian government made official statements claiming it was some kind of accident, and made a point of saying the Judge's verdict contradicted the earlier statement. The defense is planning to use the official statement as part of their appeal case.

two judicial commissions were appointed..one by state govt and other one by railway..govt appointed commission reported it was planned murder and railway appointed commission reported it is an accident.
