The brother of Dr Kafeel Khan, who was implicated in Gorakhpur BRD Medical College oxygen case, has been shot three times in a deadly assault in Gorakhpur and is is recovering in an ICU post-surgery

Kashif Jameel, the younger brother of Dr Kafeel Khan, who was in the news after Gorakhpur's BRD Hospital oxygen shortage case in which several infants died, was shot at on June 10 night in Gorakhpur.

At around 10.30 pm on Sunday night, Kashif Jameel was returning to his home on a two-wheeler after work. As soon as his bike reached the Kotwali police station after crossing the bridge near the Gorakhnath temple, two unknown bike riders fired several rounds at him. According to reports, Kashif Jameel has sustained three bullet injuries and has been admitted to a local hospital in critical condition.

Significantly, Dr Kafeel Khan and his family have consistently been making serious allegations of threat to the doctor and his family, ever since Dr Kafeel came out on bail in the BRD oxygen supply case. People reacted with shock to the news.

Early on Monday morning, Dr Kafeel Khan posted a video message on his Twitter handle saying an operation had been successful and Kashif Jameel was recovering in an ICU. Dr Khan added that the attack happened just 500 metre from the Gorakhnath temple, and questioned the state of law and order in Uttar Pradesh.

According to a journalist, back in April 2014, even before Modi government was formed and Akhilesh Yadav was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, four men, Naushad Alam, Babbu Yadav, Azeem Ahmed and Muzaffar Alam barged into his house and open fired from a pistol. They had even threatened to kill him.

RANCHI: Two cleric brothers were brutally assaulted when they were returning home after offering Travih prayers on Sunday night in Ranchi. A group of 20-25 people confronted the brothers in Agru village around 10 PM, hurled communal abuses at them and allegedly asked them to chant Jai Shri Ram. When they refused to chant, they were brutally assaulted.

According to local human rights lawyer Shadab Ansari, Maulana Azharul Islam and his brother Maulana Imran were returning after offering Travih prayers in Agru village. They were on a bike and riding towards their home in Naya Sarai village. It was round 10 PM when they were stopped by Scorpio-borne 20 people near Daladali Chowk. Hurling casteist and communal abuses at them, they started beating the two brothers.

“They asked them to chant Jai Shri Ram. When they refused to do so, they were assaulted with lathi and hockey sticks. One brother (Maulana Imran) managed to flee but Maulana Mazharul Islam was brutally assaulted by the mob,” said Adv. Ansari.

Talking to Caravan Daily over phone from Ranchi, Adv. Ansari said he is contacting the family of the victims to know if they filed an FIR or not. He has also sent his associate to the hospital.

He was rushed to a local hospital in serious condition. As he could not get proper treatment there, he was taken to Ranchi Medical College and Hospital.

After the incident, the Ranchi Police is said to have launched combing operation to nab the attackers. SSP Prabhat Kumar has assured that the accused will be arrested.

For past one year, the BJP-ruled Jharkhand has witnessed sporadic incidents of communal violence at a regular interval.

On 25th May this year, around 20 Muslim families were forced to flee their homes in Koderma district as a mob attacked their homes around Iftar (breaking of fast) in the evening and assaulted several people including women. The mob also ransacked the mosque and assaulted the Muslims who were offering Maghrib prayer there.

On 17th April, in another village of the same Koderma district, a Muslim settlement was attacked by a mob over suspicion of consumption of beef at a wedding party. The father of the bridegroom was brutally assaulted and over two dozen homes of his Muslim neighbors were ransacked.

Besides, in the last couple of years, more than one dozen Muslims have been lynched in the name of cow, beef or child lifting. in the state. In March this year, a fast-track court had awarded life sentence to 11 persons including a BJP leader in the Ramgarh lynching case whereas meat trader Alimuuddin Ansari was lynched in the daylight in June last year.

Jharkhand is going to hold Assembly polls next year. It is likely that the central government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi would hold Assembly elections in several states, particularly those ruled by BJP, along with the Lok Sabha elections due next year. Five states have scheduled Assembly polls this year and and eight states next year.

In the latest Assembly by-polls, the ruling BJP could not win any seats. Both Gomia and Silli Assembly seats were retained by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha which had got support from Congress and RJD. Out of 15 Lok Sabha/Assembly seats that went to polls in 10 states, Congress-led UPA won 12 seats including the high-profile Kairana Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh which was won by BJP in 2014.

In Monday, Dr Kafeel Khan, who is at loggerheads with the Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh and whose brother was shot thrice on Sunday night in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh said that personal enmity might be the reason for the attack on his brother.

Kashif Jameel, 34, was shot thrice on Sunday night, and underwent a successful operation where the bullets were removed.

Before filing an FIR, he had told Firstpost.com that ‘personal enmity might be responsible for the attack’. He told the media site that his brother was a property dealer and land-related disputes are common in his ‘line of work’. He pointed out that the attack took place in a high-security zone and questioned the law-and-order in the state.

Gorakhpur SSP Shalabh Mathur said that prima facie property dispute seems to be the reason behind the attack. It has been revealed that Kashif Jameel was engaged in a property dispute with the aides of an influential BJP leader in Gorakhpur.

Earlier, Dr Khan had blamed Gorakhpur Police for delaying the removal of the bullet from his neck. Moreover, they took Kashif to BRD Medical College for a repeat MLC when the same had already been done at the Gorakhpur District Hospital. Doctors at the BRD Medical College, however, refused to entertain police requests for a repeat MLC.

"There was an inordinate delay of over four hours. We had shown his CT scans and other reports to the cops to prove it was an emergency case so that they let the operation start at the soonest,” said Dr Kafeel Khan.

The guidelines on such emergency cases are clear — treatment of medico-legal cases will precede medico-legal formalities. Despite the clear directives, the Gorakhpur Police forcibly took Kashif away from Star Hospital to complete the medico-legal formalities. This happened, not once, but twice, for some 'unknown' reasons.

A well-wisher of the family made a video on the 15-minute verbal spat between adamant police officers, Dr Kafeel’s family and well-wishers at Star Hospital. The video shows police officers forcibly taking Kashif away for the MLC instead of allowing the doctors to perform the urgent surgery to stabilise his condition.

Under the guidelines, the doctor attending to the patient is held accountable in a court of law and not the police. Then why did the Gorakhpur Police overstep their brief?
