There is nothing called "Hinduism" in India. This came about only in 19th and 20th century due to a British - Brahmin alliance. Note that brahmins formed such as alliance with Mughals too but Mughals are not in to sociol engineering $hit so they did not document a "religion" called hinduism. They associated hindus with a geography not a religion because there is no one uniform religion.
Usually when a foreign power invades another country they first eliminate the elites of the country because it is elites who have a well developed sense of otherness and competition. In india the elites especially brahmins tip over themselves to ally with invaders so both can join together and exploit the natives.
The only part of India which somewhat resisted foreigners is the south whether it was vijayanagar empire and some local empires - they did no because rulers had a bonding with the ruled and therefore had an impetus to resist.
But unfortunately in current India the fiction called "hinduism" has taken deep roots in all parts. Meaningless pride associated with "hinduism" is leading many indians behave in super dumb way like we see in these forums while the country remains a basket case and frequently reviled in international setting.
