Dalit girl's limbs chopped off for resisting rape in UP, India

So what is your solution for it?

If I could wind the clock back 60 years, I'd make identifying people by caste unconstitutional in situations like hiring or education. Similar to what the US did in terms of minorities. If you can prove that an employer or organization discriminated against you based on caste, you can take them to court.

More generally I'd encourage people to make caste distinctions an irrelevance. Certainly I wouldn't write the distinctions into law.

I would say UP is the worst state in India right now, and I would blame this on SP (Malayam Singh) and the BSP (Mayawati) who have turned the state into their playground for caste based politics of the worst kind.

You are right in most of the sentences. But "take them to court."? LOL, you got to be kidding. Indian courts do not work as you perhaps expected.

It is an issue of whole social soil, i.e. the cultures and traditions. Just like the westerners have the culture of social contract and democracy, Easterners have the culture of briberies and suppressing the others to make oneself feel more aloft... Sadly, communism might be useful in wiping out cultural and traditional evils.

And the crazy thing is..... She is a Dalit!!

India is a strange country, It has these problems, but elected a Dalit as the President of the nation... It is something I think for sure it will get over. The young educated people there know this system has no place in the modern world and in modern and future India.

Let India have its social revolutions.

That is an ideal solution. But caste isn't merely a ideological segregation. A lot of the caste segregation are based on ethnicity. So it is more like a racial issue. You cannot wish it away. US has been giving quotas for blacks in universities and government jobs right? This is similar. None of the organizations discriminate some one based on caste and it is punishable by law. Caste has become irrelevant in cities nowadays. It will take time for remote villages change.

Exactly, and now the latest with Mayawati is her security officer wiping her shoes, not to forget her love for statues of herself and the money garlands. Inspite of all this it is very likely that she would be back in power the next election, I would call this a drawback of democracy when people like her get elected.

A president or a PM can not change the mentality prevailing for thousands of years. Its only educated lot that has to do away with cast system in Hinduism instead of defending it by coming up with lame excuses.

Only change in mentality is the key to reforming this evil

Of course they are, but that's precisely the problem. The castes have been politicized and now politicians are dead afraid to do away with backward caste benefits. They'd get crucified at the ballots.

Cardsharp, you are probably the only non Indian on this forum who has made a genuine attempt to understand the issues India faces. I must commend you for that.

A dalit woman gets voted to be the cm of india's largest state. she gets votes from dalits, brahmins and muslims mainly.

this is not about a thousand year old mindset, its abt caste becoming an interest group under a democratic system. unfortunately that has already happened. ethnicities, linguistic groups, classes, vocations are all interest groups too, but with caste, given its past and current misuse, its undesirable.

It is very easy to keep blaming Mayawati for all the wrong that is happening in UP. But people fail to realise that Mayawati is the Gandhi of UP. So what if an IAS officer cleans her shoes, our current president used to clean utensils at the Gandhi residence for god sake.

The problem is not the politicians, it is the people who are stuck in the dynasty mindset for the past 60 years.
