Several Tamil Catholic organisations staged a protest here on Monday against the alleged discrimination against Dalits in the Catholic Church.

The police escorted the protesters into the Vatican Embassy to hand over a memorandum to Ambassador Salvatore Pennachio, who is also the Apostolic Nuncio in India and Nepal.

Speaking to The Hindu, Kudanthai Arasan of the Viduthalai Tamil Puligal Katchi, who led the protest, said they were forced to appeal to the Vatican as the grievances of the Dalit Christians had not been redressed by the church.

“They continue to face segregation in cemeteries and are grossly underrepresented in the clergy. We gave a 16-point memorandum to the Nuncio, demanding that the Catholics who practise untouchability be excommunicated; Dalits make up 80 per cent of the clergy; and the Catholics be compelled to drop caste names,” he said.

Lawyer Franklin Caesar Thomas, who organised the protest, said what provoked the protest was the expulsion of Dalit youth G. Michael Raja from a seminary in Tiruchi in 2011. Since then, several clashes had occurred in southern Tamil Nadu and services had been discontinued in a few churches in Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts. “The Vatican chooses to remain indifferent to caste discrimination, and this agitation will continue until the problem is resolved,” he said.

I have been quite saying this for too long. Changing religion over caste is not going to give any one respite. Its time they fight against discrimination against anyone irrespective of religion. I am not sure of what others think of minority religions in india. But its far true, that caste discrimination exists in Christianity and Islam still. Intercaste marriage are still taboo.

They should learn a lesson.
You can change change your religion and physical world. But you cant change ones mind .In India Abrahamic religions drastically changed from their original form to a suitable Indian situaton with a lot of casteism.
In our state a Latin Catholic man cant marry from a Syrian Catholic girl otherwise they should leave from their houses
Now these Dalits also lost their benefits that was getting from Govt when they were in Hinduism.

So it is a classical Kua v/s Khai situation for them now. They should have remained Hindu then atleast they could have benifitted from the reservation system

I know many of this things happening around me.. That Abrahamic religions getting rid of castes of Indianism is the most plainfull lie... Even higher caste christians who might have converted for genuine reasons wont intermarry with lower caste of same religion.. Same for Muslims...
Even internationally, I don think a arab would wantedly give his daughter to someone from subcontinent..
They should fight the system from inside it..
Its like jumping from frying pan into the fire..

You are wrong in this matter . This is why there are burqas and naqabs;) . In India , there are many Indians of Arab descent who have married with native Indians.

Indian Christianity version of casteism ;)

I think here only Christian missionaries did the mistake that they have highlighted about caste discrimination so much that it goes against the real teaching of Christianity.
