DAC Clears Light Multipurpose Armored Vehicle (LAMV) Purchase

The TOI reported on February 25, 2014 that DAC has cleared the purchase of 702 light armored multi-purpose vehicles for Rs 1,200 crore during a meeting on February 24, 2014.

The Indian Army had released a RFI for a LAM vehicle in June 2010.

The vehicle is intended for cross country movement in operational conditions.

Tata Motors, which displayed its LAMV at DefExpo, is likely to win the contract.

@Abingdonboy looks promising, no?

I saw this at the time- seems too good to be true. I initially saw that the DAC had cleared the purchase of 702 light Armoured specialist vehicles and then saw that it was being reported these were the TATA LAMVs.Don't know how true this last report is if there is truth in it being the TATA LAMV that has been bought or the media has linked the initial news to the LAMV.

I HOPE this is true, a 702 order for the TATA LAMV would be HUGE news and would have repercussions beyond just this specialist light armoured vehicle requirement from the IA, it could be the catalyst for a lot more products from Indian pvt firms in service in the Indian Mil.

Would've thought that TATA would have made a fuss about this news though.....

.
This would create a new class b/w light vehicles [Gypsy-in service,Mahindra Axe,Tata LSV] and APCs (BMP-2 Sarath-in service,TATA kestrel]

.
Yes, it's already posted and discussed.

@Abingdonboy According to beloved PSG, the IA has taken keen interest in the Kestrel 8x8.

Indeed, I've heard this too but let's see how this pans out... IMHO the Kestral will be the IA's next wheeled ICV under the FICV requirement and TATA will be given the contract to supply a tracked ICV.

TATA's vehicle is quality. With assistance from Britain's Supacat. (crew protection, suspension, etc)

I didn't know we were looking for a wheeled ICV? o_O PSG says all FICVs needed by IA will be the tracked type
(Tata's FICV bidder was shown in Defexpo '12), adding that the wheeled FICV shown back in 2012 was for
potential export customers only.

The wheeled 8x8s needed by the IA are only for the APC/Recon/C&C etc. roles, I presume?

He's talking out of his backside, the IA FICV's project clearly asked for both wheeled AND tracked vehicles to be procured and developed simultaneously.

TATA's submissions for the FICV, tracked and wheeled:

Look familiar? The Kestral just without the KONGSBERG PROTECTOR MCT-30R turret. It's even labelled FICV Wheeled btw ;)

The Kestral is TATA's submission for the wheeled FICV bid, the Kestral for comparisons sake:

Try telling me that's not the same vehicle!

Not true. The IA was found to be VERY interested in the US Army's Stryker Brigade concept. Remember all the noise back in 2009/10 that the IA was going to buy the Stryker? This demand for the Stryker morphed into the IA calling for a wheeled along with tracked submissions for the FICV competition whereas the had INITIALLY only wanted tracked vehicles to replace the BMP-2s.

The Kestral will be the IA's Stryker hence why it is being proposed with 6+ variants (ambulance, mortar carrier, C+C etc etc):

The Kestrals will operate independently like the US army's Stryker Brigades that have proven to be very useful.
