Customers angry, staff defiant at China's fake Apple Store

(Reuters) - Customers at an Apple Store in the Chinese city of Kunming berated staff and demanded refunds on Friday after the shop was revealed to be an elaborate fake, sparking a media and Internet frenzy.

Long a target of counterfeiters and unauthorized resellers, Apple Inc was alerted to the near flawless fake shop by an American blogger living in the southwestern city, more than 1,000 miles from the nearest genuine Apple stores in Beijing and Shanghai.

"When I heard the news I rushed here immediately to get the receipt, I am so upset," a customer surnamed Wang told Reuters, near tears. "With a store this big, it looks so believable who would have thought it was fake?"

Wang, a petite, 23-year-old office worker who would not give her first name, spent 14,000 yuan ($2,170) last month buying a Macbook Pro 13-inch and a 3G iPhone from the Kunming store. She wasn't issued a receipt at the time, with staff telling her to come back later.

"Where's my receipt, you promised me my receipt last month!" Wang shouted at employees, before being whisked away to an upstairs room.

Staff were also angry at the unwanted attention after more than 1,000 media outlets picked up the story and pictures of the store from the BirdAbroad blog.

"The media is painting us to be a fake store but we don't sell fakes, all our products are real, you can check it yourself," said one employee, who didn't want to give his name.

"There is no Chinese law that says I can't decorate my shop the way I want to decorate it."

UNWANTED ATTENTION

While upset at the coverage and unwilling to be fully identified, staff were cooperative when Reuters visited the store, answering questions and allowing the shop to be filmed.

Another employee, surnamed Yang, said business had been affected, with customers demanding they prove the authenticity of their products.

Apple has declined to comment on the fake store or others like it dotted around China. The Cupertino, California-based firm has just four genuine Apple Stores in Beijing and Shanghai and none in Kunming.

With about 3.2 million inhabitants, Kunming, the capital of the mountainous southwestern province of Yunnan, is small by Chinese standards and not well known in the West.

Located not far the borders of Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar, the city's fast-growing industrial and manufacturing base is emblematic of China's ascent on the world stage.

The fake Apple Store is situated along a crowded pedestrian-only shopping street, its black Apple logo gleaming. Inside, with its Apple posters on the walls and iPads and Macbook computers displayed on wooden tables, the store looks every bit like Apple Stores found all over the world but for some slightly shoddy workmanship and one or two errant details.

Not all customers were bothered by the revelations that the store was not the genuine article.

"As long as their products are real it's okay -- after all, you enter a store not to look at anything except their products," said Hu Junkai, 18. "If the products you buy are real why do you care whether the store is a copy?"

Wang was not convinced.

"The biggest thing I'm upset about is that I spent so much money at this store and I don't even know whether it is real or not," she said.

"What can I do? They aren't going to give me a refund."

^^ its amazing how Chinese govt does not take actions against such fraudulent people!

before some years i read in magazine that Chinese police destroyed 5,00,000 pirated movie DVDs.

now imagine number of pirated movie DVDs produced in china.

Anyone can register any brand name, trade name provided no other entity has registered that name in China or else where - companies have to pay fees to register brand name just becasue you register it in USA does not mean it is automatically registered all over world

You can go buy world IBM in Pakistan and call yourself IBM pakistan but we have IBM who pays money to Pakistan commerce group to register that brand name so no one else can use it

Same with APPLE STORE ... it sells quality products and its a beautiful store

STORE A: Sells apple products 100% they call themselves apple store
STORE B: Sells Microsoft products 100% they call themselves computer shop
Store C: Sell apple products 80% they call themselves bestcomputers

They are all legal because the company Apple does not controls the right to name
"apple store"

They own the name apple in USA only !!! I can open a pan shop in Pakistan and called it apple shop too

There is a huge difference between
A) making your own stuff but calling your company as apple
B) copying apple's design, software, intellectual property and calling yourself apple! That is impersonation and its a crime!

I cannot believe how you can justify it!

not to mention the chinese even faked our drugs which were bound for africa with no regard for human lives itself......

Boy, 75% of fake drugs are from India while only 6% from China.

Asia Times Online :: South Asia news, business and economy from India and Pakistan

"
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) reckons that 75% of the world's total supply of fake drugs can be traced to India. The World Health Organization (WHO) pegs the figure at 35%.

Between 10 and 30% of all pharmaceuticals in developing countries are counterfeit, according to the 2006 WHO figures cited in the OECD report, which estimates that India is the biggest culprit in the spurious drugs market though other countries such as Egypt (7%) and China (6%) contribute to this."

Also, whats wrong with having a store named "Apple Store"? There is no law that says I cannot name my store "Apple Store" because "Apple Store" is not a registered trademark. In fact, Apple (the company) cannot even sue for trademark infringement on the "Apple" term because Apple is a noun refering to a fruit.

Indians are simply jealous that they had not thought of this, instead they resort to importing Chinese tablets at below cost to subsidize their dream of "35 dollar tablet".

Made In India, Faked In China

Illegal Chinese manufacturers are faking drugs, endangering patients' lives, and undermining legitimate brands, especially those from India. Bian Zhenjia, deputy commissioner of the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), told a news conference last year that reports claiming the country was a major exporter of fake drugs were unfair. "I don't agree with what the foreign media has been saying. The Chinese government has always paid great attention to cracking down on fake drugs."

It is not 75%. It is 7.5 % !

According to a report released by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), 7.5 percent of fake drugs supplied world over have some origins in India, followed by 7 percent from Egypt and 6 percent from China.[7] However, India also is a leading manufacturer and exporter of high-quality generic and patent drugs.

That could be because of the reason you supply all the fake drugs with "Made in India" label. See this is height, you are even faking labels..

Sorry, Wiki made a mistake. Asia Times is much more reliable than Wiki I think. In either case India surpasses China. BTW the WHO puts the rate of fake Indian drugs at 35%. I work in the pharmaceutical industry and I can believe this. The Indian pharmaceutical industry is a joke.

I am afraid that is not the International protocol on intellectual property and copyrights.

That is why Bangladesh is making a low cost computer called DOEL, the logo of which can be confused with DELL, but none can challenge the Bangladesh company!

DOEL is a boon for Bangaldesh students and it will skyrocket Bangladesh in the computer field.

Indian pharmaceutical industry may be a joke for you but don't give an impression that China is any better.. You may feel better by uttering BS but then that's all about it.. World view you differently. Check any major news paper in the world and they must be having a story about fake stuff/medicines from China..

Chinese passing off fake drugs as ‘Made in India’

NEW DELHI: Are fake drugs manufactured in China being pushed into various African countries with the `Made in India' tag? The Indian government has long suspected this to be the case, but it now has definite evidence for the first time.

Last week, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) of Nigeria issued a press release stating that a large consignment of fake anti-malarial generic pharmaceuticals labelled `Made in India' were, in fact, found to have been produced in China.

New Delhi has registered ``strong protest'' with the Chinese mission and China's foreign trade ministry, according to sources in the commerce ministry.
Chinese passing off fake drugs as ?Made in India? - Times Of India

Indian pharmaceutical companies are a joke but the Chinese are the greatest jokers. They can't even do what the Indians can do!

They pass fake as Indian!!

Chinese are great fakers and copycats.

They have no morals or scruples!

Their God is MONEY.

They have mortgaged their souls to the Devil!

They even pass off infant milk product with melamine!

Imagine that!

For money, they can sell even their mothers (metaphoric!)

And then have the temerity to hector!
