A youth was killed and another person injured when police allegedly fired to disperse a group of people assembled near Ramgarhia gurdwara on Tibri road in Gurdaspur on Thursday morning. The curfew was later clamped in the town in view of the tension.
The deceased was identified as Jaspal
Singh (18) of Sidhwan Jamita village near Gurdaspur while the injured was Ranjit Singh of Pandher near Gurdaspur. He had been referred to Amritsar hospital.
The injured boy has been identified as Ranjit Singh (22). He also received a bullet injury.
Around 200 persons had gathered near the gurudwara at around 11:00am while another group had assembled near Hanuman Chowk, 300 yards from the gurudwara.
In order to prevent a clash, police went near the gurudwara and tried to disperse the group stationed there by bursting tear gas shells and firing in the air.
In the ensuing melee, one person was killed in firing, allegedly by police. Senior police officers were in the town to monitor the situation.
However the District Administration is not confirming that the youth died because of police firing and claimed that investigations were on in this.
Talking to HT, Gurdaspur Deputy Commissioner Mohinder Singh Kainth said, Curfew has been imposed in the city and situation was under control. We are appealing to the people in city to maintain peace.
One boy has died and one has been injured in the clash. We are verifying that with whose bullet the boy died, said DC.
