The missile appears to be a huge fuel tank propelled by two ramjet engines.

The design approach is evolutionary, almost crude, with DRDO apparently relying on the technology that it has acquired from Russia under the Brahmos co-production deal.

It is likely the engine for the LRCM will be a derivative of the ramje6t engine that powers the Brahmos.

The use of twin engines reduces SFC, which is already grim in a ramjet engine. The missile will be mostly gas, pun not intended.

DRDO obviously does not have the confidence, or the proven expertise, to design a large enough ramjet, or a jet, suitable for a long range supersonic missile from scratch, hence the huge compromise.

The use of two engines rules out the proven circular centerline air intake of the brahmos, which is why the DRDO schematic makes a big deal out of developing "Air Frame Integrated Air Intakes."

DRDO has no proven expertise in air intakes for a mach 3.2 class airframe to fall back upon. Its starting point could well be a close study of the MiG-25 air intakes. The aircraft has been phased out from IAF but they are lying around in parks.

There are downsides to the evolutionary approach that DRDO is adopting.

The Brahmos has a much larger cross sectional area than contemporary cruise missiles (660mm against 520mm for the tomahawk). Consequently, it has a much larger radar signature.

While Brahmos' supersonic speed reduces the time available to the target defenses, especially the human element within them, its greater radar signature mitigates the threat by allowing for earlier detection that a Tomahawk type missile.

With its considerably larger size, the LRCM is going to be picked up even earlier than a Brahmos. It is moot if its size will be large enough to completely negate the advantage of its supersonic speed.

When you have a mach 7 object coming at an object, what are the options to knock it out?

As you are aware that most of the ground radars use RF rather than IR, again Brahmos uses the speed as an advantage because what option enemy has to knock it off?

Terminal guidance can be IR. All the interceptor has to do is get in its way.
And supersonic speed => large momentum => less agility (basic physics).

As i say always,brahmos can be detected,but you can't catch it...
Brahmos takes only 5minutes to reach 290km,
you have only 5 minutes,
even before the ship responds,the enemy ship will be nailed hard...
Soon submarine launched brahmos will come...

Whats the point of agility when it can shot down by any SAM,atleast a SAM is not a problem when a CM comes down with Mach 3.

Thanks Shiv for excellent updates. LRCM is more important than Nirbhay. Think of a hypersonic cruise missile cruising at speed of Mach 7 on a target!!!

They are trying hard to increase the speed and you are talking about IR emissions!!! :angel:

All the Anti-ship missile has IR emissions when increased speed so about that and Brahmos has speed three times more than them. Now which IR detection system you have to track a low flying cruise missile at longer ranges? Brahmos fly at a speed of nearly 1 km/s and which anti-missile system do you have to stop it? Also Brahmos has stealth features.

Some guys here saying that Mach 3 0r mach7 missile create too much of heat and IR detection is very easy,
please tell me which SAM has the capability to stop a mach 3 or mach 7 cruise missile which flies as low as 10 meters above sea before striking the ship.....
And does India's enemy has that system currently..
please discuss...

- BrahMos gets launched. Let's say the enemy detects it and figures out the general area where it's headed. Remember, the IR signature is generated from body friction so it's going out in all directions. And the BrahMos cannot fly as low as a subsonic missile.

- Interceptors are launched from the estimated target location. They don't need to catch up to BrahMos because it is coming at them.

- When the BrahMos comes within range of the interceptor's IR sensor, all it has to do is to manoeuver itself in the BrahMos' flight path. The interceptor is passive so the BrahMos doesn't know it is being tracked and, in any case, it can only do so much manoeuvering due to it's large forward momentum.

Bottom line, once the BrahMos is detected, it is easy to track and intercept. It's only hope is that it is detected too late by the enemy.

when brahmos is travelling at a speed of 1Km per sec,in reality is it possible for SAM to strike brahmos from front.....
if the sam misses a meter brahmos will escape..

You can fire ten interceptors per BrahMos. Why not?

In fact, the BrahMos is easier to intercept from front because of its fast speed -- because it cannot change direction as quickly due to large forward momentum.

The whole game between aircraft is about agility and evasive manoeuvers. BrahMos sacrifices agility for speed (i.e. surprise). Also keep in mind that the BrahMos is unlikely to take evasive action when it gets close to its target. Part of its punch is the huge kinetic energy, and each course change takes away from the final punch.
