WARSAW, Poland — Croatia’s government has made a decision to buy 12 second-hand Rafale F3-R fighter jets from France for the country’s Air Force, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said.

“The purchase of the multirole fighter aircraft will strengthen Croatia’s position as a member of NATO and a partner within the European Union. For the first time, we will reach 2 percent of the GDP allocated to strengthening our defense capabilities,” Plenković said, as quoted in a statement released by his government.

The deal is to be worth some €999 million (U.S. $1.2 billion) and, in addition to the aircraft, it will cover weapon systems, spare parts, logistics and training. Following the cabinet’s decision, Zagreb will proceed to negotiate the contract’s details with Paris.

Under the plan, France is to deliver the first six twin-engine aircraft in 2024, and the remaining six Rafales will be supplied the following year. The delivered aircraft will include 10 single-seater and two twin-seater fighter jets.

Other offers considered by Zagreb included the purchase of F-16 Block 70 aircraft from the United States, Swedish JAS-39 Gripen C/D fighter jets, and F-16C/D Block 30 aircraft from Israel. Through the acquisition, Croatia’s Air Force is aiming to replace its outdated Soviet-designed Mikoyan MiG-21 fighters.

In 2018, Croatia’s Defence Ministry announced it intended to purchase used Israeli F-16s, but in early 2019 the government scrapped the decision and re-launched the tender. Croatian officials told local media the U.S. government accused its Israeli counterpart of unfair competition in the tender.

Looks like a very good deal. 1.2 B $ for 12 jets with everything.

@MastanKhan why did you let these Pakistani kids anger the French? Should've bought Rafales back in 2004 so we could be building up a 100+ fleet today with used and new planes. amirite?

Hi,

You know better---it is the Too Clever PAF that angered the French----. Pakistani kids---the poor things are clueless.

You are an idiot if you think France will give you jets.. they control spares. Like we were controlled by USA on f16. Since you got jf17 pak is not under their pressure anymore. I live here and I know what they think about PAK. So stop shiting around.. in any war they will not give you any sparepart. This is what they do

Frech can sell their mère for money, throw the money and see the magic

. . .
yea money is needed

Great gesture by Kenya. This Donation was given to the Red Cross Society. An NGO. Not to the Indian Government. Can’t an African Nation give donations to the Red Cross Society? What is wrong with that?

Even you can donate. Go ahead and try. And then you can claim that India is taking donations from Pakistan.
Here is the link :-

The point still remains that one needs money to throw away towards the French. I wonder if there is an arms seller who does that for free.
Except countries like US and China who do that for strategic partnerships. They have been known to subsidise defence equipment for their so called partners/friends. Quite a lot a countries have benefitted from this benevolence.
Some of these countries dislike France when French ask for money for their equipment. Don’t want to pay? Then don’t buy from them.

There was quite a lot of healthy discussion on this subject on a different thread. All the aspects of this aid taking and giving were discussed. Facts about per capita donor receivers brought out some numbers that may not be to someone’s liking here. I wouldn’t dwell over since it is off topic and is in violation of the forum rules.

It is right as well as wrong.

There are certain countries that wouldn’t sell their equipment to Pakistan due to geo-politics. In such cases money is not the main player. You are correct there.

But the fact remains that coffers are not really overflowing in Pakistan either and it can’t really afford a quite a lot of stuff even if the sellers are ready to supply. You were wrong here to say that money is not a problem for Pakistan. Today France wouldn’t sell you anything. Geo-politics and Pakistan’s capability to pay them would be the reasons for that.

Croatia has bought these jets for a very good price.

French stuff has been proven to be one of the best value for the money due to its reliability and robustness.

Your submarines and Mirage III/V have been holding up pretty well and has been mainstay in their own areas.

The thing is that Pakistan is going towards self-reliance, the geo-politics thing is all related to getting financial benefits. Pakistanis are in no mood and incapacity to overspend to maintain their minimum credible deternece. If Pakistan can manage money to buy 8 submarines from China, then I don't see any problem in managing funds for securing a couple of Western fighter squadrons. Back to my point "Money is no problem for Pakistan" in matters of defense expenditure and getting off the chains of sanctions is the priority.

It sounds easier then the realities. The realities are here for all to see.

That was my point too. Will the western nations be keen to sell the fighter? We all know what happened with attack helicopters from Turkey. Doesn’t China make an attack helicopter? It does. The reason for going to Turkey could be better quality. When you want to diversify a little then that option may not be available as seen after this helicopter saga.

This sounds good when seen in isolation. Sanctions look bad but relying completely on China for all equipment doesn’t look too good either.
Getting everything from China may sound good under the slogan of Iron Brothers. But, slogans don’t work in geo-politics. They don’t have even the value of the number of words in them. China is not here for free lunches. I am sure we all know the downsides.

Does Pakistan have any choices? Nothing in my sight.
Hence, China remains the one and only fall back option. Even with its own downsides.

Pakistanis are getting ships from turkey, helicopters from Italy, Patrol aircraft from Brazil, and good old tanks from china while building their aircraft with Russian engines. I don't see any problems with getting their hands on things that they need. Only Americans are trying to set hurdles but that is also a blessing in disguise.
