Military ties between Croatia and China are a key part of the overall bilateral relations and should be promoted, Croatian President Ivo Josipovic said Tuesday.

While meeting with Xu Caihou, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, Josipovic said Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to Croatia in 2009 has been a strong driving force for bilateral cooperation in areas like politics, economy, culture and many others.

The two nations have supported each other on issues concerning their respective core interests. Croatia appreciates China's firm adherence to the path of peaceful development and its efforts to build a harmonious world, said the president, adding that Croatia will unswervingly stick to the one-China policy.

Josipovic said Xu's visit would enhance mutual trust and promote exchanges and cooperation in defense and military sectors, thus enriching the Croatia-China relationship.

He added that Croatia would like to work with China in learning each other's experience of army building, expanding cooperation and bringing inter-military ties to higher levels.

Xu said China and Croatia have maintained friendly cooperation since the two nations established diplomatic ties 19 years ago. China appreciates Croatia's adherence to the one-China policy and its support on issues related to China's core interests.

China attaches great importance to promoting friendly military-to-military cooperation with Croatia, and is willing to jointly advance the relationship between the two armed forces, Xu added.

Croatia is Xu's final leg of his three-nation Europe tour, which has also taken him to Bulgaria and Serbia.
