The sensational report in the Indian Express on Wednesday, which insinuated that the civilian government was perturbed by unreported Army troop movements on the night of January 16 in and around New Delhi, may have been ‘masterminded’ by a senior minister in the UPA government, according to media accounts.

The Indian Express report, which suggested (without saying so explicitly) that the government was fearful of a ‘coup’ by the Army chief, Gen VK Singh (who was then locked in an unprecedent conflict over his date of birth), was intended to “drain away support for Gen Singh” from within the political establishment, according to The Sunday Guardian.

Citing unidentified sources, the Sunday Guardian claims that the senior minister “tricked the (Indian Express) into running a baseless report”; it alleges, sensationally, that the senior minister’s relative is connected to arms procurement lobbies that have been “gunning for” Gen VK Singh for his having taken on corruption in defence purchases.

“A close relative of the minister in question has been regularly meeting with arms merchants and their lobbyists, including on his many visits abroad,” the newspaper said, citing its sources.

It speculated, citing other military sources, that the insinuation about a coup attempt was intended not merely to discredit the Army chief but to paralyse the Army in its training functions. “Already, procurements have slowed to dangerous levels… Should the military’s freedom to undertake routine training exercise of the sort described… get curtailed (because of imagined fears of a coup), the military would very son lose its fighting edge,” it added.

But Indian Express editor-in-chief Shekhar Gupta, the man at the centre of a Twitter storm following the publication of the article, dismissed the allegations that the government had fed him the sensational story.

The suggestion that “someone in government would give me the story to publish… runs into many contradictions,” Gupta told CNN-IBN late on Wednesday.

“If the story was given to us by the government to put a General in his place, why would the government deny it?” Gupta wondered. “We are not such clowns that we would put ourselves up to these denials.”

The report that the Indian Express published was based entirely on facts, Gupta told NDTV. “We look at facts, we check them, we assess them and then we put them out in public domain…”

Acknowledging that people either say that it was a government plant or that “we are traitors”, Gupta noted that Indian Express had staked its credibility on the report. “We put our necks on the line. This is not a blog under a funny name like kaala ***** or safed billi… this is a genuine newspaper story… A lot of work has gone into it. We are quite happy to put facts like this in the public domain. Let them be scrutinised.”

As Firstpost has noted before, the entire controversy surrounding the tensions between the Army establishment and the civilian government – which are at the heart of the Indian Express article – are linked to the shadowy world of arms procurement deals.

That intricate web involves, by some accounts, some Indian politicians, even if there is as yet no confirmation of the role they played.

An earlier column in The Sunday Guardian (here) had explicitly named the Minister who, it alleged, is at the centre of the controversy. Subramanian Swamy too has alleged that the high-profile Union Minister’s son was linked to arms agents.

The plot is thickening. Now that the can of worms has been opened, much more muck is sure to come tumbling out.:angry:

I was going to post this theory on my own yesterday. You have to think along the lines of whom did this story hurt the most?

Clear indication to the army to stay in line or else.

Perhaps a better question would be whom did this (false) story benefit the most. Someone who's business interests were being hurt by gen VKS's uprightness and refusal to turn a blind eye to corruption.

At least I'm glad that it wasn't the Indian Express that manufactured this story. It is one of the more reliable media outlets.

. . .
Who was the senior minister named in the original report? I don't find a name in the other reports I have read.

India's paratroopers meet their match in fog, traffic - Rediff.com India News

News from:

13th of MARCH
the 50 Air independent PARA brigade are the QRF of the IA ready to be deployed anywhere in the world at short notice but are deployed in Agra (home of the IAF's PARA school btw) but the Quick reaction/SOAR C-130s are based at Hindon (outskirts of Delhi) so this brigade moving from Agra to Delhi (Hindon) is no surprise and a VERY common occurrence for those who aren't ignorant monkeys looking to jump on a band wagon and create nonsense stories like talk of coups!! Anyone who knows anything about the Indian armed forces would rubbish such news as quickly as they read the headline.

Before "Desi" journalism was a nuisance but now, in this case, it is damn right dangerous in the effect it has on the IA to the common (ignorant) people who could buy into this BS.

I take it as a personal insult when people like you looking to score cheap points attack the military of India when it comes to their proffesionalism. I have close family members serving in the IA and with conversations with him I have gained a fair idea of how he views his service and his institution and I can not down here how much pride he takes in serving for the IA and what high regard he holds the IA in, from his accounts I can gauge that he is not alone in these beliefs and that this is the view of the vast majority in the IA. Now I have VERY close friends who have served in the UK army and whilst I do not doubt their skills as soldiers their attitude toward their service and their army as a whole was markedly different, on the whole the viewed their service as a job and not much more, whilst my cousin and his colleges view their service as paying a debt to their nation and personally guarding their homeland and all she stands for, it is quite touching speaking to him when he talks of this. For anyone to even question the loyalty of these brave, these proud, these few literally sickens me. I have no doubt these men would ather die than take action of this kind against the very institutions they have sworn oaths to defend.

You're mind set may be corrupted because of the state of you're army and you're institutions but don't assume that is the rule and not the clear exception.

No, it was not a signal to the army. It was an attempt at increasing friction between the men of integrity in the Army, and their natural supporters, the RM and PM, in the ministry, in order to take the heat off the middlemen lobby.

Err...yes.

Whom were you addressing? I didn't spot anybody taking a potshot at the loyalty of the army. Other than the original report, maybe.

 the coup should have happenned

HaHaHaHa,
The coup cannot happenn!
The nearest chance that a coup could have happenned was in the 1970s. The only General who could've led a coup (with any remote chance of success) was Sam Maneckshaw. But he was born wise and grew even wiser with age, so he did not do such thing. While Indira Gandhi was dumb enough to impose an emergency, for which the people of India rewarded her with a massive kick!

Whatever else can be grown in India, its certainly not fertile enough to grow Coups!! And there is not (and never will be) any General who will capable of commanding a coup. Just as there is no politician who can declare an emergency on personal whims.

So in the end; (warts and all) long live Indian Democracy. Coups are only in the destiny of nations of sheep.

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:
Heck, the Army Chief has to fight to prove his own age, and here are some people thinking he can attempt a coup!!
