SAPM Mirza on Sunday warned citizens to take preventive measures against coronavirus seriously. — DawnNewsTV

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Zafar Mirza on Sunday warned citizens to take preventive measures against the coronavirus pandemic seriously, cautioning that "what happens over the next few days depends on our actions, whether we take preventive measures or not".

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, he said: "The last 24 hours were heavy, 14 people died. We warned you this would happen," and added that this was why the government was emphasising on the importance of social distancing, staying at home and ensuring proper hand hygiene.

"Coronavirus is a preventable problem and its spread can be stopped if we take proper preventive measures," he said

Talking about the coronavirus situation in the country, Mirza said that nearly half of Pakistan's cases were locally transmitted. He revealed that some 17,332 people were present in quarantine centres across the country out of which 18 per cent tested positive.

The SAPM said that the fatality rate of the novel coronavirus in Pakistan had increased to 1.7 pc after Saturday's deaths while the global fatality rate of the virus was 6.1pc.

Expressing disappointment over "misuse" of N-95 masks, Mirza said that "those who don't have the slightest use of them (N-95 masks) are also wearing them."

He said that the National Command and Control Centre (NCOC) was preparing an awareness video which would be released soon but urged people not to spread misinformation on the basis of "incomplete information".

Very sad to hear this state of affairs.

Cases of Punjab are surprising. Too many politics are ruining the fight against COVID-19.

Every move PTI makes, N league resists, regardless of the good of the country.

I am sorry what why are you blaming PMLN? It's the incompetency of PTI. IK was not even ready for the Complete Lockdown

I am from Central Punjab, and I know the mentality here to blame IK for every problem and wish to see his govt fail. However let us not distract from the main point of this thread further.

Lol Supreme Court just sacked Dr Zafar Mirza over incompetency. Another joke by supreme Court. Its like American supreme Court giving verdicting on its own to remove Dr Fauci from American presidential task force just because too many Americans are dying from the virus.

As the number of coronavirus cases spiked, two union councils in Gulshan-e-Iqbal were declared a 'Red Zone' on Monday by the city administration.

Deputy Commissioner East early on Monday issued fresh directives in this regard under which Union Council (UC) 8 and UC 9 have been completely sealed, police officials said.

"No one would be allowed to enter and leave the area without any strong reason and that too only after showing CNIC to the law enforcement personnel," a police official added.

If the situation gets under control, the area will be reopened after a week, he added.

Gulshan-e-Iqbal UC-8 in Jamali Colony Rabi Apartments, Gulshan-e-Iqbal 13D One and 13D Three, while Union Council 9 includes Hamid Square Gulshan Iqbal Block 3, Block 4, Block 6 and Block 7.

Police said shops related to food items and other essential goods in those areas will be open normally but its duration will be from 8am to 3pm, with entry and exit routes sealed.

It is pertinent to mention here that two days ago, Deputy Commissioner East issued orders of sealing 11 UCs in Karachi, but the notification was suspended by the Sindh Government.
