Pakistan reports 3,582 coronavirus cases single day

Pakistan has recorded a decline in COVID-19 cases as the country has registered 3,582 new infections over the last 24 hours, the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) said Tuesday.

The NCOC said that the country’s number of overall confirmed cases has risen to 1,039,695, including 943,020 recoveries, adding that the positivity rate of infections was recorded at 7.19 per cent.

The COVID-19 claimed 67 more lives across the country in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll from the disease to 23,529, the NCOC said, adding that 3,398 people are in critical condition.

Overall 16,158,330 tests have been conducted so far to diagnose the deadly virus including 49,798 in the past 24 hours.

Sindh province is the most affected region of the country with 387,261 infections, followed by the Punjab province which has reported 358,387 cases.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains third on the list with 145,306 cases. Islamabad, 88,344, Balochistan, 30,627, AJK, 25,034 and GB have reported 8,318 new infections, so far.

To curb the spread of the disease, Pakistan also expedited the pace of vaccination and administered overall 30,590,183 COVID-19 vaccine doses on August 3, including 24,086,196 partial doses and 6,503,987 two doses.

WB reallocates $150m to procure vaccine

ISLAMABAD: The World Bank has reallocated $ 150 million for Pakistan to procure Covid-19 vaccines, South Asia Regional Vice President (SARVP), World Bank Hartwig Schafer said Tuesday.

Talking to Minster for Finance at the Finance Division, the Vice President said “the WB is fully committed to providing assistance to the developing countries for the procurement of the Covid-19 vaccines and for the purpose, $150 million have been re-allocated for Pakistan by the Bank.”

Pakistan’s Country Director World Bank Najy Benhassine and Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Dr Waqar Masood were also present in the meeting.

The Finance Minister welcomed the World Bank Regional Vice President and acknowledged the significant contribution of the World Bank in the socio-economic development of the country since 1950s.

He welcomed World Bank Group’s proposed US$12 billion initiative to help developing countries procure Covid-19 vaccines to treat up to 1 billion people.

The Finance Minister appreciated the pivotal role currently being played by the World Bank in strengthening governance and service delivery in Pakistan through institutional reforms being undertaken with the support of development partners.

The Vice President thanked the Finance Minister for a warm welcome and said that World Bank greatly values its partnership with Pakistan and supports the reform agenda undertaken by the present government.

He also acknowledged the efforts made by Pakistan for effective management of the Covid-19 crisis.

The Vice President also praised Pakistan’s commitment for cleaner and greener environment and said that the reform momentum had to be sustained in the country.

During the meeting there was a review of the progress on World Bank’s two ongoing programs “Resilient Institutions for Sustainable Economy (RISE-II)”and “Program for Affordable and Clean Energy (PACE)” as these programs hold a central position in the Government’s social and economic reform paradigm.

It was observed that the programs are progressing satisfactorily.

The Finance Minister shared with the World Bank team that Pakistan would welcome the knowledge of the World Bank team to promote the skills of the IT graduates in the country.

The World Bank team conveyed their willingness for providing guidance and informed that the Bank was preparing an operation on digital economy with the Ministry of Information Technology.

In his concluding remarks the Finance Minister thanked the delegation for World Bank’s continued guidance and collaboration on various development projects.

Over 1 mln people being vaccinated against COVID-19 daily: Dr Faisal

Aug 06 (APP):Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan Friday said the process of vaccination was in full swing as more than one million people were being vaccinated against COVID-19 every day.

Talking to media persons, he said it was a positive sign for controlling the virus in the country.

Dr Faisal was accompanied by Balochistan Parliamentary Secretary for Health Dr Rubaba Khan Buledi who also highlighted the federal government’s support during anti-COVID and polio vaccinations in the province.

He said Pakistan was undergoing the fourth lethal wave of coronavirus as the current Indian delta variant spread faster than the previous ones.

He said the vaccinated persons data was being fed in the system in real time adding sometimes a manual list also was made to feed later.

He said the rate of complainants was very low as 99 percent people had received certificates of complete vaccination on time.

He said a complaint portal had also been set up where only a few thousand grievances had been received and most of them had been resolved timely.

He said measures had been taken for preventing coronavirus especially at border crossing areas.

Dr Faisal said the number of polio cases had been declining in the country and not a single case of polio had been reported in the last six months.

“We have to save future generations from this contagious disease and convince the people that polio drops are not harmful but beneficial for children’s health.”

He said for quality medicines, effective legislation was being enacted for transparency in pricing adding a draft had been finalized and to be presented in the next few weeks.

He said Dr Rubaba being a medical professional was taking concrete steps for the betterment of health sector in the province.

The federal government would provide all possible assistance and support for improvement of the health sector in Balochistan, he concluded.

The COVID-19 situation is getting worse in Pakistan as 95 more people lost their lives to the pathogen overnight in the country, the highest single-day death toll amid the fourth wave of the pandemic.

Earlier, Pakistan had registered 131 deaths on May 20.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre's (NCOC) data showed Saturday morning, with the fresh fatalities, the country’s overall COVID-19 death toll reached 23,79


Pakistan reported 4,720 new infections on Saturday, pushing the total caseload to 1,063,125. The NCOC data showed that 57,233 tests were taken in the last 24 hours to check for COVID-19.

However, some 959,491 patients have so far recovered, whereas the number of active cases reached 79,837.

It is pertinent to mention here that infections have risen sharply in Pakistan in recent days, with the positivity rate currently at 8.24%.

Earlier this week, the COVID-19 positivity rate went over 9% for the first time in nearly three months. The country last recorded a coronavirus positivity rate of 9.12% on May 10.

Officials from the Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination announced on Saturday that a consignment carrying 528,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine has arrived in Pakistan.

The officials said that Pakistan will have procured a total of 2 million doses by Sunday, which include the doses which have already been received and the ones yet to arrive.

A consignment carrying 792,000 jabs of the vaccine had also been brought to Pakistan last night.
The officials said that the government will consider the provinces’ requirement before providing them with the vaccine stock.

Vaccine shortage hits Karachi

On Thursday, Karachi was reportedly facing a shortage of vaccines.

With thousands of people thronging vaccination centres across the city, a shortage of the Sinopharm, Sinovac, and AstraZeneca vaccines is being witnessed, Sindh Health Department officials said.

The health department officials said vaccine reserves have been exhausted at Dow Ojha Hospital, and Sindh Government Children Hospital, while supplies to inoculation centres at New Karachi, Liaquatabad, and Lyari have been suspended.

The officials said the first dose of Sinopharm, Sinovac, and AstraZeneca vaccines are not being administered, while a sparse number of jabs were available for those seeking a second dose.


Pakistan seeks to procure millions of doses

Earlier this week, Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination officials said that the federal government aims to procure more than 30 million more vaccine doses in August.
The officials said the vaccines are being purchased to keep the inoculation process smooth as the country battles the fourth COVID-19 wave.

On Monday, Pakistan achieved the one-million daily vaccination mark, with Islamabad becoming the first city to get 50% of its eligible population vaccinated with at least one dose.

680,000 more doses of Sinopharm vaccine arrive in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Another consignment, containing 680,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine has arrived in Pakistan from China, as per a report on Geo News.

Health department sources told Geo News that another consignment of the vaccines arrived in Pakistan as the country ramps up its vaccination drive as the fourth wave of the pandemic continues to drive a surge in coronavirus cases.

A special plane of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) carrying 0.68 million doses of Sinopharm vaccine arrived at Islamabad International Airport from China, the sources added.

The vaccine doses will be distributed among the provinces according to their requirement.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been recording a slow decline in its daily COVID-19 numbers over the last three days, with 4,040 fresh cases reported Monday morning, National Command and Operation Centre’s statistics showed.

According to the NCOC’s latest stats, the positivity rate fell to 7.54%.

The 4,040 new cases were detected after 53,528 coronavirus tests were taken in the last 24 hours. This pushes the total number of cases to 1,071,620.

There is a small downward trend in daily numbers, however, active cases continue to increase with the latest figure recorded at 83,298 cases.

In the last 24 hours, another 53 people have died of COVID-19. Two days ago, Pakistan had recorded 95 deaths from coronavirus, which was the highest single-day toll during the ongoing fourth wave of the pandemic.

Some 964,404 patients have so far recovered, whereas the total number of deaths has reached 23,918.

Overall, coronavirus cases across Pakistan haven’t declined significantly, however, Sindh has lifted its lockdown as of today. Revised COVID-19 restrictions, which will last till August 31, have been announced by the Sindh government.

The United Arab Emirates has once again changed its policy for Pakistani travellers, making it compulsory for them to get a rapid PCR test done four hours before travelling. Due to the absence of testing facilities at the airports, however, thousands of travellers wishing to return to the UAE have been stranded.

According to Khaleej Times, airlines in Pakistan are currently negotiating with healthcare service providers in the country to arrange for rapid PCR testing facilities at airports so that passengers travelling to the UAE do not face problems.
