BEIJING - China on Friday (April 17) revised the coronavirus death toll in the city of Wuhan by more than 1,000 to 3,869, saying it was doing so to be “responsible to history, the people and the deceased”.

The previous fatality tally was 2,579. It also increased the number of confirmed cases by 325 to 50,333. This brings the overall death toll in China to over 4,600 and more than 83,000 confirmed cases.

According to state media, health authorities said as the epidemic is now under control in Wuhan and the lockdown has been lifted, officials now have the capacity to “do a sweeping check” of Covid-19 cases in the city.

It acknowledged in a statement that miscounting and misreporting had happened in the early days of the outbreak as hospitals battled with an acute shortage of beds, medical supplies and personnel.

Some patients were not hospitalised and died at home, said the statement by the Wuhan Epidemic Prevention and Control Headquarters. Other medical institutions also did not report to the authorities quickly enough.

The new death toll puts the fatality rate in Wuhan at 7.7 per cent, said The Global Times.

Health authorities have come under pressure after photos of long lines of people waiting to collect ash urns of their loved ones at funeral homes emerged on social media when family members were allowed to pick up the cremated ashes in Wuhan late last month at eight funeral homes.

That prompted questions of whether the official death tally had accurately reflected the scale of the epidemic.

Chinese media outlet Caixin reported about 5,000 urns were moved by just one truck over two days to one funeral home.

Critics say there would have been many infected people who may have died from the virus but excluded from the death toll as they were not tested, although there is no estimate of how large this number is.

Some deaths would also have been classified as fatalities from other diseases.

When the epidemic erupted in the city in January, hospitals were sending people home as there were not enough test kits and beds.

The number is wrong, its 1290 as China CDC said, not 1000

UK also lists the.number of. death at home at another death paper, how many American death at home?

It would make sense. Now that the situation has slowed down, you can properly check the back log of death. The 1200 addition is not bad, considering Wuhan was the center for it.

Propaganda machine in the West is in full capacity. Every country with big number of patients and deaths will have to rwvise data 1 or 2 times. It is very normal.

Italy and the US will revise the data not only once, it is for sure, after the pandemic is over and their people is calm enough.

So what is the point of China revising their data? They are behaving responsibly and professionally (of course unlike the US, who will blame and cheat)

The point is the revised data is 50% of their previously stated tally. If thats not surprising I dont know what is.

From 1 to 2 is 100%.

In this case, if China increase the number from 3000 to 300.000, that would become a scandal. But it is still normal to me if the number increase from 3000 to 10.000

Your normal's are absurd and your analogy of 1 to 2 is utterly pointless. You dont suddenly add up 1200+ deaths. Its a continuous process of finding of undiscovered death tolls. Why not report it as discovered because surely they didnt discover 1200+ dead in one single day.
