Cops set to shed khaki and don smart designer uniforms

Yes KPK police has improved a lot no doubt about it because when not one but hundreds of people even politically neutral people starts saying something good about police in Pak than it means it has improved a lot.

But still corruption and a lot of other problems are there in police.
KPK police culture was always better than panjab or sindh...

Uniform also plays its part in adding to the inconvenience of the police forces, buddy.

1- most uniforms for police in the subcontinent is from synthetic fibre. The plains as you know is very hot and even humid near coastal plains.

2- The woollen beret is a colonial import. Makes sens in 20 degrees climate of the himalayan states but certainly not in the plains.

3- Rough-edged clunky belt causing inconvenience around police people's navel region sometimes even causing rashes in humidity and head.

4- Clunky rigid heavy shoes which make a chase so painful that half the time police quits.

If these things are changed to ease life a bit for the police, even they will be comfortable and happy and respond decently to common people.
But still changing uniforms and making them comfortable won't have a really big impact imho.

Even here, it really depends from state to state.

On the worst side, we have UP, Bihar, Haryana, Jharkhand and Bengal police.

Quarrelsome, lazy, corrupt, abuse power and are messed up.

On neutral side we have: Maharashtra, J&K, Assam, Odisha, TN, Punjab, Andhra etc police

On the better side we have: Gujarat, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Himachal etc

So yes we got the same thing that you guys are talking about. :)

Ugly chicks wearing blue uniform!!

We never claimed to be white, just better looking then you

So full of yourself aren't you.?
Judging people by looks..
The so called ugly girls or guys in India study and prosper not only in education but also contribute to the development of our nation...a classic example being our beloved people's president Late. APJ Abdul Kalam Sir :)
You might be born with great looks but it's your character and your mentality that determines if you really are good or not..

I don't even call Punjab police a police force because i think of them as a personal militia of a mafia family who's ready to kill anyone after model town anyway this is going off topic now.

Our worst is Sindh police if i am not wrong.

Totally i always always say this that Pakistani (at least) police should get trainers from EU we should try to make our police like them friendly with whom normal citizens will feel safe and not the other way around. But as far as i guess equipment, sirens, liveries, lighting and vehicles are concerned nothing beats US police.
I personally feel US police are over equipped with military grade equipment and Obama took a decision to strip them off such armament which Trump is planning to reverse it. Moreover SA doesn't have a prevalent gun culture like in the US but for now our police are under equipped and that should be one of the priorities of the respective state police departments. Few states are considering rifles developed by our local OFBs which is a good sign. If IA selects a new indigenous assault rifle for the armed forces, those used INSAS should be given to state police forces.

One of the new

Post a picture of yourself, lets see how un-ugly you are. There used to be thread about this, your Pakistani users have nothing to bust about in that department.

And it's pretty hilarious you as a Pakistani talking about being dark, and living in the west, you're in the, "dark", team dumbass.
These New uniforms look like a common design - giving a military look - thus giving a smart look + intimidating !

Brazil Military Police!

I think it's not the uniform that needs to be changed in SA of police forces it's the training and their mindset which needs a change.

That is possible, but you would need to totally refound the Police forces to their roots.

As I said few months ago, some countries like Estonia and Georgia totally transformed corrupt forces who's main missions were aimed at protecting the state and those in power rather than the general public,to less corrupt, more transparent, well trained, equipped and extremly efficiant ones who's main missions are to protect and serve the general public. The result is the massive public's trust gained over the time.

One important thing too. This must be followed by subsequent salary increases in order to reduce the officer's dependence on bribes and so to live decently from their work.

One of the 9 prototypes developed by National Institute of Design.

  • NID has come up with a new all-weather, visually appealing ‘smart uniform’
  • The new uniform will be standardised across all states, Union Territories and central paramilitary forces.
  • 9 prototypes developed, include shirts, trousers, belts, berets (cap), insignia, shoes and jacket, apart from new rainwear and headgear for the law enforcers.

NEW DELHI: Cops across the country are set to shed their British-era khaki. After five years of research, Ahmedabad-based National Institute of Design (NID) has come up with a new all-weather, visually appealing 'smart uniform' which will be standardised across all states, Union Territories and central paramilitary forces.

Designed in collaboration with the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), nine prototypes of new uniforms have been developed, which include shirts, trousers, belts, berets (cap), insignia, shoes and jacket, apart from new rainwear and headgear for the law enforcers.

A report in this regard is being shared with all state police forces and paramilitary forces so that they can choose and adopt from any of the nine prototypes.

Taking into account climate conditions in different parts of the country, altitude, working conditions and nature of duties, experts and BPR&D officers arrived at the new designs.

Cops' khakis too thick for summer

Inputs gathered from police officers in nine states and the general public show the present uniforms have many problems. One, the lack of uniformity across the country; the basic fit and shades change from policeman to policeman and state to state.

The fabric of the shirts worn by cops is as thick as that of the trousers, making it inconvenient in hot weather. Moreover, there isn't enough space to carry the required objects.

The berets/caps worn by cops are smart but made of wool, causing headaches and hairfall, while helmets are too heavy to wear during law-and -order situations. The metal belts are too wide and poke the stomach when a cop bends.

The uniforms are also devoid of compartments for cellphones, batons, keys etc, unlike those for police forces across the world. The biggest problem faced by police officers currently is their shoes. Those made of leather are said to be very uncomfortable for long duty hours.

The uniforms have also been found to have poor visibility in the dark. Khaki is also the colour of choice for municipality staff, some private agencies, postmen, personnel of the fire department, etc, even though cops have long argued that it should be exclusive to them.

Speaking to TOI, director general BPR&D, which helped design the new uniform, Meera Borwankar said, "There was lot of criticism of the khaki, and how its colour, fabric and pattern should be changed.

The uniform worn by police till now wasn't made for different climates, altitudes. NID and BPR&D spent a lot of time to find an alternative and an intensive report has been prepared."

The new uniform, designed with the aim to provide mobility and comfort, has shirts of a softer khaki shade (beige) that offer a smart and clean look and provide effective visibility for the insignia, nameplate, badge, medals, ribbons, and epaulettes on the shoulders.

It also has 'police' inscribed on the back in two languages. The colour of the trousers has been changed to 'earthy brown', a departure from the age-old standard of a singlecoloured uniform.

The designers felt that the uniforms worn by cops should be visually appealing, should have a fabric that provides comfort to policemen and thus helps them maintain efficiency, without eroding police authority.

Bangalore police - bad :(

First one need to speak in kannada just to get their attention and help - if not , expect to be treated with plenty of profanity as they know you won't understand what they are saying!

Twice with friends got held up at a check point for breath check - and admit that we did drink and we are very sure well below the permitted limit - never shown the reading on the breath analyser and had to fork up tea coffee funds (bribe) to get our keys back

Not the best choice of colour scheme!

It is just one of the few concepts here.

Besides, in our part of the world that design is not considered something horrendous.

Nazi ensigns are a sensitive topic mostly in Europe. In Asia, they are seen as a distant problem and often ignored.

True that but not in terms of how US police act, shooting at everyone who seems or acts suspicious. It should be more on the lines of European police

Different world and mentalities too.

I learned that at US police academies they spend an incredibly high amount of time on self defense instead of dealing with conflict managements.

An officer in Europe will try to desescalate a situation and use force and hard way if it is deemed really necessary, however the ways of doing of an US police officer will in most cases just escalate the situation (sometimes using totally disproportionate force in regard of the situation) and will end up with dead or injured people.

Also most European police forces don't have shoot to kill policies and strict rules in regard to the use of firearms.

In France for exemple, the number of people killed by police reported to the number of police shootings is negligible. And most of the times the people shot die way later because of their wounds.

Khaki has been a norm since ages for police in India. Replacing them with blue uniforms like that in the US, Europe or many other countries may pose an identity crisis and police maybe mistaken as security guards. Khaki always causes fear in the minds of common people and also a trust as police have been associated with Khaki ever since the British era and it may take quite some time to get acclimated to the change

Blue uniforms have been a norm in US, EU and many other countries as well but not in India. I am aware that blue uniforms look way better than their Khaki counterparts but blue uniforms in India have mostly been associated with ATM, hotels, corporate offices and bank security guards. It would definitely be a positive change even though it may take a while to get accustomed to Blue.

Salary is one big issue but main prob are nepotism, corruption, political interference and political appointments these are just few of the probs i am mentioning. We currently suffer from the same problems Estonia and Georgia once had as you mentioned 1000's of police man have the duty to protect family and friends of the one in power this causes a shortage of man power too.

That's why i say for training and education of officers we need to go the European way. We gonna need a lot of time to build trust and respect between public and police force.
