The steel-cutting or ground-breaking ceremony to begin construction of the MILGEM Ada-class corvette by Turkey for Pakistan was held in Karachi, the Pakistan Navy said on Tuesday.

The ceremony at the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KSEW) — Pakistan Navy's specialised shipbuilding division — was attended by officials of the Pakistan Navy, representatives of Turkey's state-run defence firm ASFAT, and the managing director of KSEW, Rear Admiral Ather Saleem.

In July 2018, the Pakistan Navy had signed a contract for the acquisition of four MILGEM-class ships with ASFAT.

According to the plan, two corvettes will be built in Turkey and the other two will be built in Pakistan that also involves technology transfer.

The keel-laying or the formal recognition of the start of the construction ceremony of the first MILGEM Ada-class corvette was held in Istanbul last week.

MILGEM vessels are 99 metres long with a displacement capacity of 24,00 tonnes and can move at a speed of 29 nautical miles.

MILGEM anti-submarine combat frigates, which can be hidden from the radar, will further enhance the defence capability of the Pakistan Navy.

"The MILGEM Class Corvettes will be state-of-the-art surface platform equipped with the modern surface, subsurface and anti-air weapons, sensors, and combat management system," the Pakistan Navy said in a statement.

"These ships will be among the most technologically advanced platforms of the Pakistan Navy and will significantly contribute to maintaining peace, stability, and balance of power in the Indian Ocean region."

Speaking at the ceremony, the general manager shipbuilding, Commodore Muhammad Jahanzeb Ahsan, underscored the deep-rooted friendship between Turkey and Pakistan for collaboration in the field of indigenous warship construction and other defence sectors.

In October 2019, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan along with Pakistan Navy Chief Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi had cut the first metal plate of the first MILGEM Ada-class corvette during a ceremony in Istanbul.

Why German supply the propulsion system for these ships while they ban tank engine for Altay?

The fourth one uses Harba Missile in 3x2 cell configuration.

The elevated placement of the VLS in this image indicate the missiles are longer ones and that means MOST probably LY-80N. Lets wait and see.
However LY-80N do make sense as it is already in use with PA. The only thing against it was the fact that PN may not be interested in mixing things up and will go for a Turkish or western system on the Turkish boats, this is what i mentioned in previous posts as well. However there were always a lot of things in favour of it too, primary one being the fact that we are already using it and are most likely to get the same ones on our Type 54A frigates from china. Perhaps a local production facility can be chased going forward.

The design doesn't necessarily indicate LY-80. The Type 054A's HQ-16 configuration involves two target illuminating radars in the aft, which are totally absent in the PN MILGEM. Thus, the PN MILGEM design suggests that the PN will get an active radar-homing (ARH) SAM -- the LY-80 is a semi-active radar-homing (SARH) SAM.

The raised VLS need not indicate a longer missile, it could also be the fact that the Ada's bow simply didn't have enough room for any SAM, so they had to create the additional space by elevating the VLS.

I am really happy to see the final evolution for PN as a design to match told needed for PN. At this point in time I highly doubt that PN is considering redesigning 4th example . I believe the redesign already happened. And this will be the design of a light frigate that carries the punch of a full frigate. I think PN should plan to build next gen DDG with design phase starting now with final finish product by 2028

I can see that being the case. Unless they're thinking of forcing a 32-cell VLS into the I-Class, this is about as good as they'll get out the MILGEM's 2,000 to 3,000-ton designs. But if they're buying the IP rights to this design, then I expect we'll see another 4 or 8 ships through the rest of the 2020s and 2030s.

ok, all you said makes more sense than what i was saying :)

I can see that being the case. Unless they're thinking of forcing a 32-cell VLS into the I-Class, this is about as good as they'll get out the MILGEM's 2,000 to 3,000-ton designs. But if they're buying the IP rights to this design, then I expect we'll see another 4 or 8 ships through the rest of the 2020s and 2030s.
That is what they said. That the fourth one will become lead ship of a new class of frigates. Meaning there will be more to follow.

I still feel that the first three with be ada-class as far as displacement is concerned but with more weapons like Istanbul class frigates (VLS). We call these Jinnah class frigates. The fourth one will be a new design, most probably an extended hull with more displacement and more VLS on board with tech taken from TF-2000 AAW frigates.

Naval classifications are kind of irrelevant. Frigate, corvette, however it is classified its irrelevant. We know capabilities wise, its not on par with the 054A/P as it is a smaller ship, however, it is a very, very capable surface combatant. We will probably see the Z-9EC for ASW.

It will be more stealthy then Type-54-A/P and as per pic will have Smart-S Mk-2 radar which makes it very capable and in some areas better then Type-54s what needs to be seen which SAM PN will go for.

I have been saying this before, PN Helicopter fleet is in a dire state. Alouttes are finished, Sea King, even with upgrade, is very old. Also too big for Corvette. Z-9C is OK, but maybe not compatible with Western systems. Ideally we need SH-60 Seahawk but this is US so PN will not go for it. My guess is they will try and Navalise a version of AW139 that PAF has



Could be we station a platoon of Marines/SSG on the ships if/when needed

Italy is good option for helicopters as Pakistan have already purchased helicopters from them.

PN have studied options like South African Umkunto and European like Aster-15/30 or Sea Captor, it all depends which radar PN is opting if Smart-S is coming then other then Chinese SAM are possible.

Its all propaganda. Notice how nobody bothered to ring the bell on this. Its because few people actually follow naval defence developments in contrast to land defence, thus the Germans didnt give a ****. Nobody really gives a **** outside of the occasional virtue signalling, but even those that virtue signal come around to sell stuff to us shortly after. Just like Canada did recently with optics. Its all a massive charade.
