CONFIRMED: India to build its first foreign Naval Base in Seychelles

There is a limit to how much the MoD is able to commit to projects at any one time, right now the ANC is being massively augmented and this base in the Seychelles is being devloped (not to mention the coastal radars being set up in 4-5 IOR nations by the IN)- for now basing rights in Oman are more than sufficent. In 5-6 years the IN may revisit this decsion.

I would like to add, we need a bigger economy too, to maintain multiple foreign bases. Its extremely costly. So as you said, it would seem perfect for the future once our economy has grown.

Exactly, and they are not just a drain on funds but other resources too such as manpower, it is doubtful the IN could maintain/man all of these bases at current force levels and you don't want them to stretch themselves too thin. The IN is expanding itself with these things in mind but it will be a few years before the results become apparent.

Frankly, One wonders as to the reason behind why would India seek a naval base in the Seychelles except to pre empt China.

Is it wise to thus engage China as the resources we can commit at this stage certainly are miles behind the Chinese.Nor would a base in the Seychelles or Mauritius serve as a check on Chinese shipments of minerals & other resources in case of a flare up.Wouldn't it be wise to commit money instead of employing our navy to deploy its meagre resources .

I'm just thinking aloud & soliciting responses from senior members here hoping for some clarity .

Thanx in advance .

But a full blown base there would ensure that we are the kings of Indian Ocean.

Then why are not creating a naval base at Oman ?

Security is important to safeguard our economic interests. We all know , where there is peace there is prosperity.

The best way to fight the Chinese navy is to bottle them in the exits leading to the Indian Ocean

The reason we are poor today is because we didnot project power in our good times.and let every one loot us.

it is 68 years since the British left. India is poor because of misguided policies and unwillingness of common man to think clearly and to fight wrongs.

But still we have come a long way. Just look at the poverty reduction stats for example. More and more is being done. Soon we will reverse the destruction caused to our people by the British.

The Seychelles government has joined hands with India to build India's first naval base on the Assumption Island in the Indian Ocean region as a joint project between both countries.

The island country has allocated a plot of land on the Assumption Island, which will help to enhance maritime security along India's west and south coast. This initiative has come following China's establishment of its first African naval base in Djibouti in November 2014.

The new naval base aims to put an end to piracy around the East African part of the Indian Ocean. Besides, India will also acquire a fully operational coastal radar system in Seychelles from March 2016.

Relationship between India and Seychelles has positively improved in the past few years. Indian music maestro, A.R.Rahman was named as the Ambassador of Seychelles in October 2015.

Here is the island allocated to India:

Nehru had the same mindset and never gave importance to our military, and 62 happened.

If intent was anti-piracy operation then a full-fledged base near Gulf of Aden would have served the purpose. For example- Turning Oman's naval listening post to full-fledged naval base and turning it into a naval airbase too. I wonder what is the need when Madagascar serves the purpose.

Nope, not at all. Gulf of Oman is very well covered. It is just that coverage of the Southern Indian Ocean needs to be ramped up. And no, its not even about piracy; though it is about pirates. :D

Lol its not even close to Seychelles... it almost to Madagascar!!! What a misallocation of resources.
Don't worry about our resources. Worry about yours!

And, you don't seem to have the faintest clue why the base is being established there. So don't jump around with glee. Makes you look silly!
