Complete information & Analysis on India's Akula II SSN ("INS Chakra" and "Second One")

Hi
Sir, any news about the second one?
Will it be Kashlot or Ibris?
Cheers
Thanks

Sir,is it true that the I.N. is using the Klub-N version as the primary SLCM in case of I.N.S. Chakra??If yes, then how many of these can be carried by the I.N.S. Chakra at any given time??

Whereas the Russian Navy's Akula-II could be equipped with 28 nuclear-capable cruise missiles with a striking range of 3,000 km (1,620 nmi; 1,864 mi), the Indian version is reportedly armed with the 300 km (162 nmi; 186 mi)-range3M-54 Klubnuclear-capable missiles.[32]Missiles with ranges greater than 300 km (162 nmi; 186 mi) cannot be exported due to arms control restrictions, since Russia is a signatory to theMTCR treaty.

Austin, Nerpa will have 8x533 TT, same like the last 971 sub for Russian Navy - Gepard. Weapon load for Russian Navy is 40 in total: TEST-71, USET-80, UGST torps, RPK-6 Vodopad and M-5 Shkval antisubmarine missiles as well as Granat SLCMs (currently not carried due to Ru-US disarmement agreement). Only if India requested and paid for necessary modifications she will carry Clubs. I have no indication that this has happened.

India's plan to lease a cutting-edge nuclear attack submarine to help obtain technical knowhow for an indigenous project has run aground, with Russia seen to be backing out of the deal for as yet unknown reasons.

Senior officials in Delhi and Moscow told ET that the plan to lease the Yasen-class attack submarine - two of which are in service with the Russian navy - is being reconsidered after fairly advanced talks on the project.

India was keen to acquire the latest Russian submarine so that it could participate in the construction of a new boat in Russia from scratch and give planners and designers in the navy here a rare peek into the building process of one of the most complex military systems in the world.

By being involved in the process from the beginning, India would have gained expertise for an indigenous project to produce six nuclear-powered attack submarines for the navy under a Rs 1-lakh-crore project that was cleared by the Modi government in February. Talks were at an advanced stage with NSA Ajit Doval, too, said to be involved.

However, ET has learnt that Russia is reconsidering the matter and has now offered India one of its older, Akula-class submarines on lease, similar to the Chakra II currently in service with the Indian navy on lease. "The plan now is to lease an attack submarine that is in service with the Russian navy. This submarine would be deeply modernised to meet Indian requirements," an official familiar with the developments told ET.

While the Indian navy has been taken aback with the development, efforts are still on to rescue the Yasen project, with planners said to be against the lease of older generation nuclear submarine from Russia. "We are hoping for a resolution and there is a possibility that this (the refusal) is a negotiating tactic. We have not closed hopes on the project yet," an Indian official told ET.

The circumstances behind the blockage are unclear, although sources point out that the funding for Yasen-class submarine could be an issue. Another issue could be Indian planners talking with French and US submarine builders.

Earlier India had received a nuclear submarine of this type- Project 971 also known as Akula-II- on lease from Russia. The Indian Navy currently operates this Akula-II class submarine called INS Chakra.

NEW DELHI: Apart from the major defence deals signed during the India-Russia summit, Russia has agreed to lease a second nuclear attack submarine to India. The deal is purportedly worth $2 billion.

This agreement, which was not made public, was signed on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Goa last weekend with other major defence deals such as the S-400 Triumf air defence systems, the joint venture of Kamov helicopters and frigates, worth billions of dollars.

A report written by Alexei Nikolski, a columnist with a Russian daily Vedomosti reads, “According to a person in the Russian defence ministry, the long discussed lease to transfer a multipurpose Project 971 nuclear submarine to India from the Russian Navy was signed in Goa.”

The Defence Ministry did not comment on the matter.

Earlier India had received a nuclear submarine of this type- Project 971 also known as Akula-II- on lease from Russia. The Indian Navy currently operates this Akula-II class submarine called INS Chakra.

The INS Chakra is a 8,140 tonne nuclear powered attack submarine. India had sponsored the building and sea trials of the submarine provided it was given to the Indian Navy on lease for 10 years. It was launched as K-152 Nerpa in October 2008 and entered service with the Russian Navy in 2009. The submarine was leased to the Indian Navy in 2011. Chakra was commissioned into the Indian Navy in April, 2012.

What happens once the lease period expires
Will we extend it for another 10 years
Coz Akulas are going to be more capable than any other nuclear submarine fielded by India and China at least for the next 10 years

In 10 years, our own boats should be near completion. There was a buying clause in INS-Chakra. This one is much more secretive. No body is sure, what we are getting.

Looking at the secreacy over the deal ... And all other parameters Indian Navy and GOI must be having some other goals associated with this deal.

Like....

1. Help for our nuclear power source designed for Arihant.
2. GOI is in hurry and I am glad they are planning to maintain minimum deterrence for our motherlands safety in the given hostile environment.
3. I am also happy that all defense deals at least moving there places.

PLUS .. The second nuclear powered submarine will be very well accommodated in our arsnel.. as we can see we have experienced Crue, infrastructure, adequate support and technical staff ready and well trained as we already operate a sub of the same family.

Which one are we getting?

For starters, INS Chakra is Akula I improved not Akula II.
