European Commission has urged EU member states to take action to accelerate Turkey's membership negotiations

European Commission has urged EU member states to take action to accelerate Turkey's membership negotiations following statements from Germany and France that a new policy area could be opened in talks with Ankara soon.

Peter Stano, spokesperson for EU Commissioner for enlargement Stefan Fuele, said in a daily press briefing on Monday that the commissioner had welcomed France's proposal to open the policy chapter on "Regional Policy and Coordination of Structural Instruments" and German Chancellor Angela Merkel's "positive remarks" over the issue.

Stano said EU members had pledged as recently as last December for "active and decent accession negotiations with Turkey," calling on EU countries to live up to their promises.

"Member countries themselves wanted a fresh momentum in the accession negotiations and we believe that momentum will be attained," Stano said.

Well well well, now they want us in?
How things can change when you are patient, its our time to play now.
Ten years should be enough,by then we are in the best position ever and tell them to make ''tursu''(Pickeld vegetables)out of their EU.

Why does Turkey want to join EU? It is a sinking ship, with loosers such as Greeks.

We let them think we want to get in,we still have 50% of our economy depending on EU countries.
Slowly we are changing this but untill then we need the EU.
If we become independent from the EU on all issues(produce evrything we need and sell evrything we can to the middle east, afrika, asia and the rest of the world)then we can say NO TY.
The future of the EU is dead as we know and they know that to, they(Germany) want to keep Turkey close for military, economic reasons.
East is the new West.
They played with us for 50 years, now its our turn.

The human development standards are the main reason. economy is not the only aspect a country should master. The aim of Turkish citizens are not to become a non-oil-dependent Saudi Arabia!

democracy, transparency, equality of genders, human rights, freedom of speech, the least of social soppurt, Turkey has a way to reach the top notch developed state but thanks god, she is in a right way and she does move with an acceptable performance. Others may help Turkey to develop economically but Europe living standards is an unmatched thing almost in all over the world. One can not abstract the concept of Euro to only Greece economic performance.

If all that you stated above could become the turkish society, then we need democrasy.
Human development is the most important one.
For now,in our countries democrasy is going backward and not forward.
As long as you can ''buy'' a vote democrasy is a fantasy.

I accept that, but the solution is not on widening the gap between Turkey and Europe. To be honest there are lots of benefits for the Turk nation in accession process of Turkey to Euro-zone. Government has to generate and develop lots of rights for the nation through the process.

Please forget all those ugly thins you hear others say about Turkey acceptance process to Europe. Most of them has origin in jealousy my dear. In fact most of the advantage the nation will gain is before the full acceptance provided by the pressure from EU to the government to alleviate the living standards.

Let's others say whatever they want. Never forget there are lots of people who do not want to see Turks as a fully developed nation both in Eu and out of EU. Maybe, some burden is on Government but that's the nation who will enjoy the achievements. Regardless of what short-sighted people think about, there will be some day you will push forward the living standards in the world, just by patience, step by step, every thing calculated, with a steady move, Yolunuz Açık Olsun!

Then again, according to what you've said, one can conclude that it is better for Turkey to remain as a candidate rather than being a member, or giving up. Remaining as a candidate is relatively safe from the economic troubles that European countries currently dealing with, and the hope for the membership is also encouraging Turkey to increase its living standards, human rights and democracy.

I wish, we hadn't need the "homeworks" and guidence of EU in order to carry our country to a better place where there is a true democracy and respected human rights, but with this kind of leadership, people should be thankful we haven't still ended up as being a theocracy.

As i said before, Turkish people have lost their ambitions for EU long ago, hence no one cares it anymore. Actually no one wants Turkey to join it anymore, including me. But if the guidance of Europe is needed in order for my country to be a true democracy, then so be it. In my opinion, this encouragement and the economic relationship are the only things that matters about EU, not the membership or anything else.

There is no widening the gap between Turkey and Europe,Germany is Europe and we do alot of bussiness with Germany(most of the bussiness with Europe).
Turkey and Germany will allways be partners, because of Germany we are what we are now to be honest(from the european bussiness side)
So if or when Europe collapses it doesnt hurt us.
The human developments, we have to do on our own and not because Europe dictates.
We have a long way to go but who would have tought 20 years ago that we would have come this far?
By then Turkey and Iran will be in a different position so lets say YOLUMUZ ACIK OLSUN!
