Coal energy: at what cost?

A propaganda ... do these guys even now how much usa india and china depands on coal for energy ??? We are less than 1% ... if we dont do it we will remain incompetitive and we will remain poor ... this pollution is not even being followed by the leaders of antipollution campaign as US is one of the biggest user of coal ...

.
Sell it?

I thought Chinese coal was being used? Thats what I heard.

Initially... thar is being utelized... link u posted in beggining of thread states thar has enough coal for our energy needs for 400 years

. .
So no chinese coal?

Thar coal has some issues... its low quality mostly... infrastructure needs to be developed for it to be supplied to plants...
There are minefield mouth plants being built throughout thar as part of cpec... atleast one is in advance stages... several others are in various stages... eventually thar coal would replace imported coal... thats the plan from begining
Minister of Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal recently informed the parliamentary committee on CPEC that Thar coal would be used for electricity for the next 400 years and that two transmission lines were being installed at Mariari — one to Lahore, and another to Faisalabad, which will be connected to the national grid, benefiting all parts of the country

Nothing is cheaper, dependable and above all more reliable than local reserves be it coal or gas!
Buying gas form Iran cost money...and in this case..hard forex...
But the way we do business coal will destroy everything near by bucause of pollution

Unfortunately they never faced the same environmental threats Pakistan does. Major cities are already largely polluted from motor vehicles from the 1960's.

Will we glassily coal?

bro,
its short term stragedy to bring down rates of electricity , for boasting manufacturing sector in Pakistan, which is facing hurdles because of very high cost of energy.and after that long term stragedy to have wind power, and Hydal Electric with Nuclear energy.
Do u believe that our weaving sector have cost of energy around 27% percent, which is very very high.
Even my brother have a small salon, and just Pay more than 20000 per month as electric bill.

. .
Every energy source has its pros and cons. It is up to Pakistan to decide what mix of energy sources it wishes, or is able to, use to alleviate its chronic and growing power shortages. Coal very likely will need to be part of the solution.
Agreed

Coal = build plant in 2 years but bad for environment, slightly costly but cheaper than thermal

Thermal = build plants more quickly but high running costs if imported

Nuclear = cheap electricity but takes 10 years to build, can be very risky

Hydro = cheap eleectricit, takes years to build and you cannot generate electricity at maximum capacity for whole year

Wind/Solar = becoming cheap each year but covere a lot of space

We need to compromise one source of electricity or another

It has to be the right kind of mix to supply the power need at an acceptable cost and time-frame. BTW, coal is also a thermal source, like gas and oil.

I still have my doubts whether Thar coal will live up to the hype, but imported coal will play a role, i am sure.

Yes i know its thermal... but i was trying to distinguish between oil/gas and coal as we are now focusing on coal

But you did get the meaning of my post yeah

Yes, I understood your point, but the power generation side of things is still an easier problem to solve than the distribution side of things, specially billing. That remains a total mess.

thar coal is low lignite. so the only way to use it is "burn it at it's ore". you can not transport it and then use it.

heard it somewhere.
