CM Usman Buzdar announces ban on polythene bags in Punjab

Congrats we import tones of raw plastic , it will mean no more Import of plastics
Saving us 2-3 Billion dollars in imports

Trade Pakistan, should tell all importers to not import plastic

Pakistan doesn't operating on "telling" anyone. Only the danda works. Fear of consequences, nothing else!

Slap a heavy tax directly on the bag manufacturers and price each bag at 5 rupees retail. No free bags for end customers.

Ban is not going to work.

Banning outright is utter stupidity , instead make alternatives cheaper and then gradually end use of plastic bags , banning would lead to loss for the manufacturer and jobs will suffer

nothing will happen till we stop the import of resins and materials used in plastic manufacturing which is not doable as the same ingredients are used in other industries as well. The easiest way to ban plastic bags is to stop the local manufacturing of them and then afterwards enforce ban on their sale as well.
There are hardly 2 dozen big firms who control the plastic industry by supplying resins or raw material to other smaller manufacturers. Hence enforcement should not be a problem provided the political will is there and an enforcement plan is chalked out.

It appears, you are somewhat mistaken. Plastic is a general term used for a variety of different chemical compounds, which are used in a large numbers of products. Polythene bags would only be a small proportion of that.

lol ban this or that yawn one of easy job to announce to even not move your lazy azzes just announce, and why it’s even a PM announcement? Where are the relevant ministers or ministries?

1. What is the alternative?

2. Why not ban other Plastic items such as pet bottles first when there are easy alternatives available such as aluminum cans, glass bottles etc

Proof : How relevant Buzzdar is
Logic behind his announcement.
Super Buzdar Level up xp +1

Plastic is cheaper.

The issue comes when you are buying meat or food items then plastic bags are the most effective means of carrying. Cloth or paper bags will start dripping.

Best way to do this is;

1. Charge 5 or 10rs per bag.
2. Offer bio-degradable bags (seen them in Morocco
3. Encourage use of hemp bags

Bans dont work unless alternatives are pushed aggressively, which are available easily in cost effective ways.
All the steps taken towards safeguarding nature is appreciated, but to make is success the habbits have to be changed and thats a hard process.

We also have bans, it works only till the time govt agencies are strict, once they go soft again the plastic bags creep in, especially at groccery stores, fruit and vegetable vendors etc.

The news headline is misleading, as usual. He did not announce a ban on polythene bags. He actually announced that polythene bags will be banned in the future, and that he has formed a committee to oversee the implementation of the ban.

Presumably, this will entail a plan of action including a phasing out (rather than an outright ban), making sure that alternatives are available, mandatory pricing of polythene bags that will continue to be available, and enforcement measure.

The issue comes when you are buying meat or food items then plastic bags are the most effective means of carrying. Cloth or paper bags will start dripping.

The ubiquitous "t-shirt" plastic bags are definitely a menace, and are most likely the object of this ban. Although commonly used for meat, they really should not come into direct contact with food, as they are not safe. There are food grade clear plastic bags that should be used for meats, and will still have to be available.

I’m certain that the govt has been reading PDF looking for policy ideas. We were discussing this last week. No problem - we are happy to assist :)

You can always take small house steel containers/pots or hotpots if you want to buy food item from outside. I remember I personally used to take these kinds of pots when I was sent to buy some food items in 80s and even 90s,
