You can not be friends with Russia and the United States at the same time. If India is going to strengthen cooperation with the United States - cooperating with Russia will strart to reduce.

What are our strategic goals in aligning with the USA? If it is to contain China, let us be clear that it is India which will be a battlefield, not the USA.

A military alliance with the USA, formal or informal, will mean that India will be sucked up in Sino-American disputes. We have disputes with China, but they are just a schoolyard brawl compared to the looming USA-China rivalry for resources and power balance in Asia.

USA has nothing left in its economy, except armaments, which is what it is selling to us. Its not as if we are getting stuff free. Yes, we should buy stuff where ever we get best, but it must come with tech transfer. Will the US give that?

US has already successfully contained China. India has no role to play either way. We need to quit having these illusions of grandeur.

US still controls the global market in technology, money and education and we need all three.

Containment is not a one shot game, its a continuing exercise. How do you think China has been contained? And what will be the relative strengths of the two countries 25 years later? Can US go it alone in Asia against China? If not, then besides Japan which is the other big country which can substantially oppose China.

US will always like to play the puppet master game rather than getting into direct conflict. Why else do you think the new found keenness for defense ties? OK, sale of arms is one factor but not the entire story.

As for tech, money and educations, we don't need a defense tie to get those.

I agree. But Indians are extremely suspicious of China, largely because of its nuclear and other gifts to Pakistan.

As Chinese economy declines, and the society opens up, Jingoism will increase among the Chinese. India has also made mistakes by not making serious attempts to solve border disputes with China.

The USA does not consider Russia to be a threat of any kind, politically, economically, or military. The USA has ten times the military power of the USSR. Russia has about 1/7 the economy of the USA and their investment in military research and development for the last 20 years has been about 5 percent of that of the USA.
