Featured Close to one trillion cubic feet gas discovery in Kalat

Understand existing proven reserves are about 300-million barrels of oil and 30-tcf of gas. This figure of 164-million bbl of oil & 24.6- tcf gas as total potential 'untapped' reserves of oil & gas, is not encouraging at all.

With one well costing as much $20 to $25-million and "NO" discovery in 11 well in 11 years, coupled with a cheap oil world scenario, future exploration is hardly worth the bother.

Both the Solar & Wind energy costs are now competitive with fossil fuels. Assuming the article above describes the correct state of affairs; IMHO it would make economic sense to import oil from the Arab Gulf and focus on the exploitation of the country's full solar & wind energy potential.
Does that mean the 1tcf hit every 10 digs isnt worth it?
So this find isnt worth even 250m$??

I have said "If" the estimated potential reserves figure if correct? I was of the opinion that while our potential undiscovered oil reserves may be less than 1-billion barrels, potential undiscovered gas reserves are much more, maybe as much as 50 tcf. The figure of about 26-tcf reserves is based upon US Geological Survey which could be estimating very conservatively. I am still of the opinion that Pakistan has larger untapped gas reserves. However, the incumbent MD of PPL would be better informed. Should that be case, my suggestion is valid.

Nevertheless, if you could guarantee 1 tcf every time. Yes, it is worth it. But most of our recent discoveries have been much smaller. 1tcf could give you 400 mm tcf per day output whereas if one looks at the last 5 or 6 gas discoveries, their production was estimated at between 25 mmtcf to 35 tcf per day.

Seems out of 11 wells in kalat basin they hit 2 with 1 being a big find (1tcf)

This seems to be a good run so far

Yes, in current scenario, it looks expensive, but who knows in next few month the international prices would shot-up and we would be struggling.

sir do u have any idea about kekra
and its potential?

Honorable Sir,

Oil exploration is not an “Exact” science. A geological survey carried out by the experts of the most experienced oil companies of the world such as ExxonMobil & Eni would only inform you of the existence of a reservoir similar to the ones which normally have hydrocarbons. But unless one drilled into it to physically check what is inside, one can never be certain.

Initial results must have been very promising that is why the consortium consisting of ExxonMobil, Eni along with Pakistani OGDC and PPL decided to risk $100-million into the project. However, the fact that the reservoir contained mostly water instead of the hydrocarbons indicates pitfalls associated with oil exploration.

No, I have no idea of the potential. Since the site was very far from the coast and on would need another couple billion dollars just to build the pipeline to bring the product to the mainland, my “Guess” is that expectation was of the existence of a field containing at least 4 to 5-billion bbl of oil equivalent.

. .
It is the first discovery in this Kalat plateau block, hopefully more to follow.
Second first was december 2019
But 2 in 11 drills with one being a major find isnt bad...i hope with this find further development cost will drop as investment comes in to develop this find

anyone knows what happned to first Margand X-1 well
didnt find any further new on it, were nay more developmental wells dug there?

or 22 to be precise

This is 1/7 of sui
So major find but wont change much dynamics..
We need 3-4 sui size finds to stop gas import
The new discovery may not change the economic fundamentals, yet the direct market value of 1 trillion cft gas is about $4 billion. If used to produce power the value addition goes up by at least three folds.

And when the power is utilized to produce industrial goods the value goes up by another three folds. So, the issue is how best the country would utilize the new find or all its already discovered gas.

No, this is the same well, that time the announcement was about discovery of hydrocarbons, now they have actual size of recovery, which are commercially viable, it is bigger than the early estimates, bearing gas column of about 1 Km. There are total 13 exploratory drill in Baluchistan since 2018. PPL has made 11 discoveries in 2018-19 and further two in 2020.

Good news but not really a game changer. Hydro, Solar and Thar coal remain the priorities.
Gas is quite a game changer because it can be piped.

Unlike coal which requires either locating plant near the coal mine (and long distance high voltage lines to cities from it,) or very extensive rail infrastructure.

Gas turbines can be sized to pretty much any demand, unlike steam units. Gas turbine plants are also quicker to build than Rankine cycle ones.

That's exactly what's needed to provide a lot of power quickly, and close to cities.
