Clerics declare terrorism crime against Islam, humanity

* Hamid Saeed Kazmi says national ulema convention on 17th to seek guidance on terrorism

KARACHI/ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: A conference of clerics belonging to various schools of thought held at the Sindh Chief Minister’s House expressed concern over the prevailing situation across the country and declared terrorism in all its forms the greatest crime against Islam, humanity and Pakistan.

Prominent clerics, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Provincial Minister for Religious Affairs Sajid Jokhio and provincial government officials attended the conference.

A joint statement issued after the conference said all those who were involved in these crimes were enemies of Islam, Pakistan and humanity. The participants offered special prayers for clerics, armed forces personnel and citizens martyred in acts of terrorism and also prayed for the swift recovery of those injured in acts of terrorism.

The conference demanded the government pay “Diyat” (blood money) to heirs of all the martyrs as per sharia and make arrangements for the treatment of those injured in terrorist acts. The moot stressed the need for complete unity of the people to steer the country out of the prevailing crises.

The clerics assured the military that the entire nation backed it in the fight against terrorism. They appealed to the people to maintain law and order during Muharram and be on the lookout for suspected persons.

They asked clerics of all sects not to adopt improper stances against other sects in order to promote religious harmony. The clerics also demanded the government keep a check on all religious gatherings and apprehend those who violated the code of conduct.

Conference: Meanwhile, Minister for Religious Affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi said the government had decided to convene a conference of clerics from all schools of thought, including the heads of religious political parties, to seek guidance on the issue of terrorism. He said the purpose of the conference would be to seek guidance from the clerics and evolve a unanimous approach towards terrorism, adding the meeting would be held on December 17 at the International Islamic University’s Faisal Mosque Campus.

Also on Monday, Aalmi Tanzeem-e-Ahle Sunnat leader Pir Muhammad Afzal Qadri said those “laying down their lives in the fight against terrorists are martyrs as they had waged jihad against the people [Taliban] who created fasad (riot)” in the country.

He said Islam did not allow anyone to kill innocent people or attack mosques. app/tahir niaz
