Osama bin Laden was in Pakistan's detention for years and was killed after the country struck a deal with the US, a top American journalist has claimed citing new evidence and disputed Islamabad's assertion that it was not aware of the raid that killed the al-Qaeda leader.

Legendary US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh repeated his claim that Pakistan was aware of the Navy Seals' raid that killed bin Laden in 2011 in his his compound in Abbottabad town near Pakistan army's elite training school.

Bin Laden was the founder of al-Qaeda, the group that claimed responsibility for the September 11 attacks on the United States.

In an interview to Dawn, Hersh said that since last year he had seen new evidence that cemented his belief that the official US account on bin Laden's killing was deceptive.

He also reiterated his claim that Pakistan had detained bin Laden in 2006 and kept him prisoner with the backing of Saudi Arabia.

The US and Pakistan then struck a deal that the US would raid his compound but make it look as if Pakistan was unaware.

"Pakistan is in constant alert because of India. Their radars are watching, their F-16s are up all the time," said Hersh while arguing that it was not possible for US helicopters to enter Abbottabad without alerting the Pakistanis.

When asked if he still believes Pakistan helped the United States get bin Laden, he said: "More than ever". When Hersh first made this claim in an article published last year, it shook Washington and forced the White House to reject the story as false.

Major US media outlets also rejected his claim as incorrect. But Hersh repeated the claim in his new book, 'The Killing of Osama bin Laden' published this week, insisting that he was right.

He said the then army and ISI chiefs had made this deal with the Americans, which upset other Pakistani generals.

"The then head of Pakistan's Air Defence Command was very, very upset. He was ready to go public," said Hersh, claiming that the disgruntled general was made PIA chairman after his retirement to keep him silent.

In an interview to Democracy Now, a network of more than 1,400 radio and television outlets, Hersh said the US and Pakistan had jointly created the "myth" "we discovered" where he was living.

"What I know is...that in August of 2010, a Pakistani a colonel...came into our embassy, went to the then CIA Station Chief Jonathan Bank, and said: 'We’ve had bin Laden for four years'."

Hersh told Dawn that the colonel was later moved to the US and was now living somewhere near Washington.

"The Pakistani intelligence picked him (bin Laden) in the Hindu Kush area, built the compound in Abbottabad and put him there," he said.

So Pakhtoons do not want to be independent? Hmm I always knew them as fiercely independent. You must be hipster Pathan. City dweller types. Long lost your frontier roots. I could be wrong maybe Pathans now prefer Karachi city life under Sind/Punjab leadership squabble.

What do you mean by "independant"? They are not under slavery inside Pakistan. Their ways and their lifestyle is preserved and well respected not only at state level but the rest of Pakistanis appreciate it as well. Infact, Paktoons play a pivotal role in preserving Pakistan own "independence" through their contributions in armed forces of Pakistan.

In practice no.
Again look at their history. Crime is of second nature to them ( in some cases the dominant nature ).

Education can help elevate one's level of thinking, education can not feed poor hungry souls nor can it keep them
away from adopting crime to feed themselves.

I would say even with education it will take a long time to change the mindset but it will. Let's take the EU as an example, just 70 years ago they had WW II and they were killing each other for centuries.
As for corroboration of your opinion though, a few dozen Afghan refugees were allegedly involved in groping and harassing women in Cologne, Germany at new year's eve which raised an alarm and made the situation really bad for all the refugees and even immigrants and helped the refugee-phobic people and media to make best out of it.

Where as Americans use their regular armed forces to kill / capture, whosoever they suspect as terrorist from both Afghanistan and Pakistan. In the end your sovereignty is only as much America deems it is.

Its their choice to use a term coined by Hindus or use a proper term. But a Pashtun himself should not use word 'Pathan' for himself in any language. If you have noticed, all the quality international English newspapers use word Pashtun not Pathan. And the quality journalism and litertaure in Pakistan, has also started using word 'Pashtun' and 'Pakhtun'. You should keep on using proper word Pashtun or its dialectal form Pakhtun, the other Pakistanis would pick it up with time, not in overnight , but in years or perhaps decades.

You also know nothing. Historically there never has been rivalry between Tajiks and Pashtuns. Tajiks have always been peaceful subjugates of Pashtuns and Uzbeks in Afghanistan and Central Asia respectively. The surge of Tajiks and their heightened resentment for Pashtuns is rather recent, happened during 90s civil war, and during Taliban regime.

Pushtuns deserve Tajiks as their overlords.

I could be wrong, after all I get my reports through media. The media in Pakistan seems to be hell bent on pointing all Pakistans' ills on the "Paktoon refugees" and on the community as a whole. But like I said I could be wrong.

One thing is very confusing for me, when we ask for action against TTP, Kabul says they cannot do much about it because they don't have control over those areas and blah blah .................... but Kabul's forces are always present for cross border shelling and clashes with Pakistan? That is beyond me
