Chucked out by Pakistan, ailing 'Afghan girl' to get free med treatment in India

They were trained to eject the USSR from their lands, we put our necks on the line for them in the spirit of Muslim brotherhood and solidarity.

Trouble is, you weren't exactly helping "them" as a whole - just one type of "them". It wasn't a war between Afghanistan and Soviet Union, the Afghans had many competing interests and factions. The Soviets were invited in by one section of Afghans, it's not like the Soviet army destroyed the Afghan army and conquered their country.

It was a civil war, in which many Afghans and Russians took one side, and many other Afghans and Americans and Pakistanis took the other side. Just like the Vietnam war.

It was a civil war, and "in the interest of muslim solidarity", you sided with the religious extremists, the Taliban and their predecessors. And Afghan people had to live in misery during the Pakistan supported Taliban regime - they were way better off when the Soviets were present, and a different Afghan govt was in power.

For the Americans, it didn't matter - they just wanted to undermine Soviet interests - if Afghans had to suffer under religious tyranny, it was their problem. Until of course, 9/11. But for Pakistan, the consequence was closer to home - now the same ideology has grown in Pakistan as well. I don't need to tell you what that ideology has done to you.

That nurturing of Taliban and their ideology hurt Afghanistan the most, then Pakistan, and America to a much lesser extent.

So don't build this narrative that Soviets invaded Afghanistan, and Pakistan helped the entire country etc. No, the Soviets were invited in by one section of Afghans, and the US immediately started supporting the other side - which is what they always did during the cold war. Pakistan sided with the Taliban and their predecessors, because "Islam!"

The USSR was not invited by "one section", it was invited a small number of unelected bureaucrats, as far as Shura-e Nazar being non-extreme, let me tell you it was Burhanudinn Rabani who invited OBL to Afghanistan btw how many Afghans do you know? I know plenty, infact I was married to one, not a single Afghan that I know supported the USSR occupation, we were only giving the people what they wanted.
