Seems like the jerks are the ones who are picking up the most chicks no matter where you go .

In a way that is good, saves you the trouble of having to identify the different types.

Some of them will learn. Some of them will be lost. It's the same with those 'jerks'.

Japan is a good example what China should do to. They held on to their values and pride while westernizing. Hell if they can get nuked by Americans and still look down on them as Gaijin. They get a goldstar in my books.

Actually one of my best friends when I was growing up was Japanese.

And you're right, I think Japan modernised in a way that was very distinctly "Japanese" and I'm sure China will do the same thing.

For example China didn't follow the Western economic model, which was a very good idea in hindsight, since it saved us from being seriously damaged by the global Credit Crunch. The Economist refers to the system as the "Beijing consensus".

It's all about "confidence" really. The reason why some jerks do well, is not because they are jerks, but because they have confidence.

It goes quite a bit beyond confidence IMO. "Jerks" give girls a sense of danger and unpredictability. Girls love that. Some days the "jerk" makes her feel like the most special girl in town, and some days he treats her like Sh!t. It's the same rush you get when you gamble, sometimes you win sometimes you lose. The times you lose just makes you want to win even more. We're just wired to find random reward to be addictive.

Hmm it does seem like the jerks are more confident than your average decent guys though. Chicks also seem to dig guys who do stupid things (not being adventurous but STUPID as in smoking marijuana while backflipping into an empty pool). I've read somewhere that guys often take unnecessary risks to impress females but doesn't the fact that chicks dig morons reflect upon the path that we are going on as a species?

stupidity is rarely rewarded in the end. to be honest, i know no one that is truly stupid, and i know high school dropouts who did it because they wanted to become professional game players...

i know exactly what you mean. this is not as evident in the inland here, but when i went to shanghai it was much more apparent. on 南京路 there was more english than chinese. that is unacceptable. the "american" clothes (we all know that they're made in china anyways) sell for ridiculous costs... some "regular" brands cost 3000 RMB for a shirt, i got my nike shirt for 79 on a bargain.

another thing, why do people buy name brand pants. no one looks at your pants. i buy 地摊货 for 40-60, it looks and wears just as good as the 10000 RMB ultra luxury pants from some italian designer. this obsession with luxury fashion is stupidity, does anyone truly need 10000 RMB pants?

when i went to my girlfriend's village near 咸宁 we went to a department store in the city to skate and eat... this is a small city near 武汉 with an average income about 1000 per month, nowhere near as developed as even 武汉 not to mention shanghai... i saw 5000 RMB ear rings! and teh store was completely empty, yet they still remained in business!

Make you sick doesn't it? It's one thing to spend that much when there aren't people barely making ends meet or if there aren't people slipping into poverty because they have to pay their mother and father's medical bills, but if there are.... what is your excuse for spending that much?


I'll just tell those folks now. When you come to Canada dressed to the nine in ugly gucci loathers and ill fitting burberry pants, no one is going to be impressed.

It actually could get worse, we can be the next economic superpower and still be regarded as second-class citizens all around the world. This goes back to the old point about Chinese softpower. There is no way others are going adapt our values and culture when we ourself are throwing it by the wayside in pursuit of everything western.

Japanese culture seems to be more refined than the chinese culture they derived from. Infact I feel Tang dynasty china should be closer to japan culture than what we have now. Somehow everything got coarser and spiritually deteriorated after the Yuan dynasty.

One thing I have to say is that we chinese don't seems to take care of our history like others do. I travelled to england recently and it leaved a deep impression on me. I visited museums and landmarks and have to say the english are proud of their history, and they recognise both the good and bad. Hell they even showed the torture chamber in the tower of london. They take good care of historical artifacts and buildings. Perhapse we have too much history that we've lost the sense of their significance.
