I do however start to feel a worrying trend in some of the modern cities like shanghai and chongqin. The people are getting materialistic in a beyond healthy sense. We need to find a goal in life other than making more money.
I think deng's slogan "getting rich is glorious" may still apply in rural areas where standard of living is below national average but we need to invigorate the rich cities. Officials certainly don't need to get more glorious then they already are.
We can't just keep making money and become complacent like some of our opium smoking ancestors, and we can't keep our heads in the sand. There is I think two major problems surfacing in china that is becoming an strong unhealthy undercurrent - Namely improper acquisition of money and improper views on women. I actually supports government ban on internet ****. The damage it causes is worse for people with low education level.
do I sound like an old fart?
Yes you do but we like having you around anyways. My real beef with the rich in China is a little more petty than what you've very valided mentioned. My beef is their obsession with brand, status and west=high class.
As a consequence, they dress hideously in all name brand with no sense of style, spend ostentatiously while there are needy poor all around them, and fail to build any real sense of Chinese cultural prestige (if you can sorta figure out what I mean)
No one respects you until you respect yourself and NO one respects a slavish copier of fashions and trends.
