Chinese super hybrid-rice researchers claim new world record yield
By Liu Xuanzun Source:Global Times Published: 2018/9/3 23:18:40

China has set a new world record for super hybrid rice yield with 17 tons per hectare at a demonstration base in Gejiu, Southwest China's Yunnan Province.

The rice was planted in 6.67 hectares of a demonstration base in Gejiu, a county-level city located on top of a mountain north of the Red River valley, which flows from Yunnan's Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture to Vietnam.

Researchers harvested 17 tons per hectare of the Xiangliangyou 900 super hybrid rice, Beijing-based newspaper Science and Technology Daily reported on Monday.

Such a yield is "a new world record for large area-planted rice output per hectare," according to a statement released on the website of the rice creator: Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center, a division of the China National Hybrid Rice R&D Center.

More than 100 officials and scientists from all over China witnessed the harvest on Sunday, in which three smaller fields were chosen randomly and then examined for yield by agriculture experts, the statement said.

"The record shows that China's rice breeding technique continues to improve and that China's rice production potential continues to rise," Li Xinqi, a research fellow at the center, told the Global Times on Monday.

The harvested rice was planted in March, the newspaper reported. The rice grew with plentiful, well-developed seeds and no major diseases or pests were spotted, the report said.

Li said the rice could meet the country's demand for emergency food supplies and help farmers profit.

China's "father of hybrid rice" Yuan Longping has set a goal of reaching a rice yield of 18 tons per hectare by 2020, with other demonstration bases in China also striving to reach the goal, according to the statement.

"The plantation model has shown similar results in other places," Li said.

yield needs to be matched by quality not quantity.
How much fertilizer, water. pesticide is required is what this article is not writing.

True but this guys been doing it for such a long time and with exeptional results. I'm sure he's already factored all of the above considerations in plus more.

The rice is produced in less welcome conditions as it is more adaptive to harsh conditions and less vulnerable to disease.
no friend.... i farm that is why i am asking the question.

hybrid seeds are difficult as you must get new seeds for every crop. Second, they need a lot of resources e.g. water, pesticide, fertiliser specific to the hybrid.

In my case, we avoid any proprietary seeds because i can reuse same seeds next year and after. This is the challenge once you are locked with monsanto/adm or others you cannot move away. same applies in this case.

White rice doesn't have that much nutrition. I think future research shouldn't focus only on yield but more on added nutritions like Vietnam A, D, etc, from genetic engineering or not.

I am not sure about the seed-use properties of China's rice. I have no technical details. But, the seed is for China, of China, by China. It is a public property. So, I am sure, it will be used as a seed. After all, it is all about how you manipulate the gene.

First of all, in China, the research is done by the government itself, not by some foreign parasitic interests such as Monsanto.

It is obvious that they will not allow you (a foreign customer to them) to save the seed from this year's crop and then use it next year (they even do not let their own farmers have that capacity. All they care is profit maximization. Just as all they care in waging wars elsewhere is profit maximization and they do not care about how many PSTD maniacs come home and crying Rambo). They will not let you re-use. Because, then, you would be independent from them.

The last thing they want is your independence.

In China's case, the state runs the research and development through various institutes. So, it is public interests, not private, that are taken into consideration.

When it comes to private foreign interest, not only rice, for instance, other crops also cannot be used the next year. Israel does that with tomato, too, for instance.

China's advantage is such that public interests triumph. Plus, China has complete national control over the propriety rights. China's agri science is pretty much independent because, from the very early on (Mao Zedong), China has paid utmost attention to food security. Mistakes have been made, but, today, China is more or less a self-sustaining nation in food production.

China uses 7% of the world's arable land, Feeding 20% people in the world. Forward-looking decision based on Mao, Therefore, hybrid rice is indispensable, Chinese people admire Yuan Longping very much.
