Here is the source ...

It was purchased at auction for US$20 million by Chong Lot Travel Agency, a company widely believed to be a front for Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN)[4] Chong Lot stated that the ship would become a floating entertainment center and casino in the Chinese SAR of Macau. This was proven incorrect as the ship was docked in Dalian and painted PLAN grey. Defense news and intelligence sources indicated that the ship had been refitted and would be put through sea trials in mid-2011.[5]

Actually China did a sleight of hand. China bought a few older carrier and made them into casinos. When China tried to buy Varyag, its official intention was to build a floating casino. Other countries didn't oppose to China buying an AC as China had a past record of buying older carrier for casinos. If China had tried to acquire Varyag and didn't had a record of turning older ACs into casino's, others would had questioned China's intentions and might take steps to prevent China from buying Varyag, even when it was stripped down.

Our major shipyards have all been busy to build our coming warships, and it makes sense that the production of the civilian ships goes down for a while.

BTW, Korea/Japan cannot build their own warship without the help of USA, since Uncle Sam would never pass any crucial technology to them, nor it will allow them to develop their own.

Well you have to give Korea credit where credit is due, that is they do have a more matured and more developed commercial shipbuilding. But most of that is due to the boom out of China. It's China who are renting/buying all these ships, from Germany to Korea. And I suspect even if China could build and manage as well as western corporations, there would not be enough domestic output to meet the demand. Chinese companies still has some ways to go when it comes to management and competing internationally. Korean companies didn't get to where they were overnight. All things considered, when you consider how chaotic and inefficient the business environment is in China, China isn't doing too badly.

I agree however defence sector is an another matter entirely, even if they possessed the technical know how and industrial capacity, they would be politically hamstrung by domestic opposition; budgets, getting around American inscribed laws that was forced upon them; American/Chinese interests; and to a lesser extent nkorea.

The chaos is controlled and is part of the efficiency. This isn't Congo, Zimbabwe or North Korea we're talking about.

I did not belittle them, just check the technological aspects of their Aegis destroyer, and you will see who is babysitting them.

Without the US, they can't build anything for their military.

.
without the US, countries like india, japan, south korea, vietnam, phillippines would be cave men.

only china is capable of challenging american dominance, thats why they are forming alliances with their lapdogs in asia.

china dont grovel to no one.

two indegious carriers are being built now, those casinos are still carsinos receiving guests.

Talking about economy and comparing with South Korea

Too bad china will never be like South Korea.

South Korea's per capita GDP is 5 times greater then china. :partay:

Not sure about South Korea, but China is already the second largest economy. I think India is more comparable to North Korea though :azn:

.
Both Koreans and Chinese are smart, hard-working people.

Korea has the advantage of an established reputation earned over several decades of quality products. And they will continue to try and maintain their technological lead.

The Chinese are relatively new entrants so, of course, they will start out at the value end of the product line, but nobody should doubt the Chinese capacity to product quality products -- especially for their defence needs. In time they will move up the value chain and establish their reputation. As for the consolidation in Chinese shipbuilding, this is normal capitalism at work; the inefficient and weak companies die off while the more competitive ones survive.

.
Well, since Korea controls the past and India controls the future, we can never compete with them. :cheesy:

The past belongs to Korean (Koreans are always masturbationg how powerful they were in history)and the future belongs to shining India(Indians are masturbating how strong they will be) The current belong to American(Only this one is truth) .
