Chinese Navy escorts 3,000-plus vessels near Gulf of Aden

Chinese Navy has implemented escort for more than 3,000 Chinese and foreign vessels in the Gulf of Aden and the waters off the Somali coast during the past two years with 100% success rate. This is the first time for China to use military strength to go abroad to safeguard its national strategic interests.

The first Chinese naval escort taskforce arrived in the Gulf of Aden and the waters off the Somali coast on January 6, 2009 to officially start its escort for the Chinese ocean-going ships passing through the waters.

Xu Zuyuan, deputy minister of the Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China, said on January 6 at the activity to mark the two-year escort of the Navy of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) held by the China Ship-owners' Association that the PLA Navy had dispatched a total of 7 taskforces and 14 naval ships to sail across the oceans to successfully escort 3,000-plus Chinese and foreign merchant vessels in 281 batches with 100% success rate.

Xu Zuyuan urged all communication and transport units to further strengthen their coordination with the PLA Navy and go all out to cooperate with the PLA Navy to do a good job in the escort. He also asked all the shipping enterprises to summarize experience and draw lessons, increase necessary facilities and equipment and constantly improve their capability and level in guarding against pirates.
