A Chinese man's pre-wedding photo-shoot turned into a nightmare after as he was beaten by Vietnamese frontier officers, the Beijing Times is reporting.

The paper says 28-year-old Xie Feng (alias) was left with soft tissue damage and four broken ribs on February 7, as he was returning to China through the port in Mong Cai with his mother and fiancee, after a trip to Vietnam to shoot wedding photos.

Ren Lili (alias), Xie Feng's fiancee, told Beijing Times that the three of them handed over 330 yuan (about 48 USD) in total to frontier inspection staff and a security guard, as they entered Mong Cai port on January 25.

However, on their return trip, Xie had been told by a friend that he didn't need to hand over any money.

Then he turned around and started to head out of the customs hall. Ren said he was about to make a phone call to his friend as he wanted to check if that was true.

"Then a woman who was asking for money started shouting something in Vietnamese, and seven or eight frontier officers rushed over to beat him," Ren said.

Xie was handcuffed and brought back to the customs hall by force. The officers bound his feet and took him to an office on the second floor where they continued to beat him, Ren said.

Their passports were also taken away, she said.

Eventually, they put an exit stamp on Ren's passport and allowed her to leave.

Once she arrived on the Chinese side she turned to the Chinese frontier officers for help.

Xie and his mother were then allowed to leave with the help of Chinese frontier officers, and Xie was rushed to hospital.

Ren also made contact with the Chinese Embassy in Vietnam and called the police during the incident.

The China Embassy in Vietnam told Beijing Times that they had received a call about the incident at the time it happened, and lodged solemn representations with Vietnam's Bureau of Consular Affairs, Beijing Times reported.

The Embassy said the incident was "shocking" and they were "indignant"; they said they had asked the Vietnam side to investigate the case thoroughly and severely punish those who were involved in the attack in accordance with the law, according to Beijing Times.

Neighbors should be more mindful and respectful of each other. I wonder if Vietnam border offices could treat US or French national in the similar manner. Not good for mutual trust.

If true then the Vietnamese border officials are very despicable.

I was at one of the border checks there...It is true, they ask for money. Most people just ignore them.
This rule is written on most Chinese tourist guidebooks about Vietnam: treat those officers like they do not exist. Once you respond to them, they will target you.

If they want more tourists, they should first clean their customs.
Anyone who has traveled across Sino-Vietnam border can see the big differences in the two customs, at one side, officers are polite and stick to the rules, at the other side, officers ask for money and no rules of law are ensured.

What is this 300 yuvan for
Who and why he got this money ?

Why he refused to pay money

the article mentions 330 yuan I think it is the fee for visa for three people. 110 each. What could have happened was the Chinese man lost the receipt when entering Vietnam. since this year there is e-visa. Nobody is no longer required to pay cash at the border. So such regrettable thing can be avoided, Vietnam tourism is on the rise. 10 millions foreign tourists visited Vietnam last year. I don't think many such events are happening otherwise we would hear more.

no point for Chinese to travel to Vietnam. so many other places to visit
The number of chinese entering Vietnam rises by 65pct in January.

Chinese tourists should throw some banana to these monkey ...
Unnecessary to spew such thing. I am pretty sure those border officials will be disciplined if found guilty.

Chinese human smugglers are bad too. They beat the Viet women sold as brides by steel pipe if anyone tried to escape as a recent report revealed recently.

That is extremely despicable.

This kind of corruption very well documented by anyone travel to Vietnam, you have to bribe the custom security in other to enter or leave Vietnam or they will create all kind of trouble for you.

i was born in Vietnam and I see no reason for me to go back there.

Maybe the sides should arrange a better system to manage tourism across the customs at the border to prevent illegal activity and arbitrary behavior by the officers. The two sides are also better to have someone around to speak both languages to prevent any misunderstandings, which usually lead to unnecessary confrontations.

The fact is that both Vietnam and China are developing nations at different stages. China's services are more developed and streamlined with better discipline.

The interesting thing about the incident is that, according to the report, the man was simply heading to make a phone call and a customs official lady began to shout at him. Then six-seven officers took him off and assaulted him on another floor.

That's a hell of an experience. Normally, even if he misunderstood or did something wrong, the assault on him by the officials who are there to protect people in the first place cannot be justified. At best, he would be taken to a room and the matter would be solved through communication.

Nonetheless, the border is there to stay; and the two sides have no other option but improve the process.

Vietnam expands border gate economic zone to boost trade with China
2016-11-17 Xinhua

HANOI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has approved an expansion of a Border Gate Economic Zone in the country's northern China-bordering Lao Cai province to boost cross-border trade between Vietnam and China.

According to the decision taking effect recently, the Lao Cai Border Gate Economic Zone, some 250 km northwest of the capital Hanoi, will include a tax area, a border gate area and other functional areas, reported Vietnam's state-run news agency VNA on Wednesday.

The expanded zone is expected to be put into operation by the first quarter of 2017.

With the expanded economic zone, Lao Cai's import-export revenue is forecast to reach 4.6 billion U.S. dollars by 2020 and 10 billion U.S. dollars by 2030, said VNA.

No. beating our guests is not our habit. Usually we invite him or her to a pho.

I don't know why such violence came. Or is the chinese man identified as one of those women beating human smugglers?
